Discovery of Novel Therapeutic Targets for the Protection of the Retina and Optic Nerve
Synopsis
Glaucoma is a major leading cause of blindness worldwide, characterized by the progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, atrophy of the optic nerve, gradual narrowing the visual field, and ultimately blindness. To combat this, it is essential to prevent the ischemic and oxidative damage that triggers RGC apoptosis and optic nerve damage, in addition to effectively lowering IOP. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with a history of thousands of years of clinical use in China, offers a valuable resource for novel therapeutic discovery. This project aims to explore the potential of a TCM-based decoction in treating glaucoma through in vivo and in vitro experimental approaches, with the objective of uncovering new cellular and molecular mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to develop innovative therapeutics for glaucoma, thereby expanding treatment options. By creating safer and more effective drugs, this research seeks not only to improve clinical outcomes but also to enhance quality of life and deliver significant socioeconomic benefits.
