RISA member showcases AI and medicine-engineering integrated innovation

On 28 April 2025, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) unveiled groundbreaking research projects which applied artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine-engineering integration. During the showcase, Prof. CAI Jing, Management Committee Member of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Head and Professor at the Department of Health Technology and Informatics, presented the AI-assisted lung radiotherapy support system developed by his team. It employs an innovative “function-guided approach” for designing optimal individualized radiotherapy plans for lung cancer patients, which can reduce radiation damage to lung and enhance post-operative quality of life. The innovation has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. RISA member features in the interview with Headline Daily

Prof. David SHUM, Management Committee Member of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA) and Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was recently featured in an interview with Headline Daily. In the interview, Prof. Shum underscored the commitment of PolyU to advancing the healthcare system in Hong Kong. He highlighted that PolyU has nurtured over 50,000 healthcare professionals. RISA member’s research team promotes a community-based screening system for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) to older adults

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic degenerative disease which can hamper functioning and quality of life of older adults. To address KOA, Prof. WEN Chunyi, a Management Committee Member of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), develops KneeVidScan- a community-based screening system for enabling its early identification and intervention. On 28th April 2025, Prof. Wen’s research team collaborated with the Caritas Sai Kung Elderly Center to introduce KneeVidScan and conduct screening to elderly participants, the workshop received enthusiastic supports. RISA researchers triumph at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) snatched 36 accolades at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (Geneva Inventions Expo), a prominent annual event devoted exclusively to invention. Among the winning projects, Prof. CAI Jing, a Management Committee Member of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Head and Professor at the Department of Health Technology and Informatics earned a Silver Medal. Besides, Prof. DO Chi-wai, a RISA member and Associate Professor at the School of Optometry won 2 Silver Medals in collaboration with his teams. RISA supports 2025 Biomedical Engineering Day and Alumni Homecoming

The 2025 Biomedical Engineering Day & Alumni Homecoming, organised by the Department of Biomedical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU BME), supported by Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA) and Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports), concluded successfully on 29 March 2025. The event endeavored to facilitate connections among BME alumni and showcase recent innovations. A key highlight was the launch of the BME Entrepreneurs Club (BMEEC), officiated by Ir Prof. Yongping ZHENG, Director of RISA and Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub, Henry G. Leong Professor in Biomedical Engineering, Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Prof. Zheng emphasized that the BMEEC was dedicated to sharing the entrepreneurship stories and supporting start-ups founded by BME staff, alumni or current students. He also introduced 17 BME start-ups and expressed optimism that the BMEEC would facilitate innovative ventures in the areas of medical technology and gerontechnology. Eight of the start-ups were founded or advised by RISA members, underscoring RISA’s ongoing efforts to promote advancements in these fields. Aligned with PolyU BME’s mission to foster health and quality of life for older adults, RISA will remain committed to collaborating with BME and other stakeholders to drive research and innovation in pursuit of this goal. PolyU’s AI-powered healthcare technologies featured in RTHK TV programme

Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV), Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology, Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health; and Ir Prof. ZHENG Yongping, Director of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Henry G. Leong Professor in Biomedical Engineering, were featured in RTHK’s TV programme “Hong Kong United”. RISA co-organises The 5th Biomedical Engineering Innovation Competition “Love．Innovate for Happy Ageing”

The 5th Biomedical Engineering Innovation Competition, titled “Love．Innovate for Happy Ageing”, was successfully held on 18 January 2025 on the PolyU campus. This year’s competition, organised by the Department of Biomedical Engineering of PolyU and co-organised by the Research Institute for Smart Ageing and the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, was divided into two categories, including the “Challenge Competition”, an intergenerational robotic car competition and the “Design Competition”, a creative gerontechnology product design competition.   This year’s design competition was joined by nearly 650 college, secondary and primary students as well as elders, and they were divided into 62 participating teams. PolyU-invented Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton wins CES 2025 Innovation Award in US

The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton developed by Prof. HU Xiaoling, Associate Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Co-founder of PolyU startup Thecon Technology (HK) Limited, and her research team, received the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 Innovation Award in the Accessibility and AgeTech category at the CES 2025 held in Las Vegas, United States. Prof.Hu is a Member of the Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA) and the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports). The award-winning innovation is a multimodal robot rehabilitation designed for ankle-foot rehabilitation, specifically aimed at improving the motor function and walking ability of stroke patients.    Organised by the Consumer Technology Association, CES is the world’s largest and most influential consumer electronics technology exhibition. Ir Prof. ZHENG Yongping, Director of the Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Henry G. Leong Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, was featured in HOY TV programme “Health Concern Group”, introducing Liverscan® developed by his research team. Liverscan® is used for the early diagnosis of liver diseases and frequent assessment during treatment of liver diseases, through measuring the propagation speed of ultrasound in liver tissues for the accurate and rapid assessment of liver fibrosis and fatty liver non-invasively.
