RISA member honoured as RGC Senior Research Fellow in recognition of outstanding research achievements

6 Aug 2025

Prof. Lei SUN, member of the Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA) and Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has been awarded a fellowship under the Research Grants Council’s (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) 2025/26. In each round of the yearly exercise, SRFS provides ten places encompassing all academic disciplines, which Prof. Sun is an awardee, recognising his exceptional research achievements in biomedical engineering.

His innovative project “Development of sonogenetics for non-human primates” aims to develop a new version of sonogenetics specifically for non-human primates and to investigate its performance in terms of cellular specificity, spatial accuracy and penetration capability. This new sonogentics can contribute to the dissection of global neural network connections, establish a better understanding of the circuits underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders, ultimately serve as a valuable therapeutic tool.

His remarkable success recognises the contributions of RISA scholars in advancing biomedical engineering and healthcare. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Sun for his outstanding accomplishments.
