Myopia (short-sightedness) is a highly prevalent problem and growing global public health challenge. Our researchers have addressed this by developing a breakthrough non-invasive treatment and revolutionary optical devices that help reduce myopia progression in schoolchildren by up to 60%. These patented inventions, including the DISC contact lenses and spectacle lenses, and DIMS spectacle lenses, have transformed myopia management and are now commercially available worldwide.

This achievement builds on the team’s pioneering studies on the regulation of eye growth using pre-clinical models, and successful translation of the myopic defocus technology into clinical use. The breakthrough was made possible through multidisciplinary collaboration between our optometry researchers and the manufacturing specialists, combining proof-of-work research with academic-led startups to demonstrate commercial feasibility.

The work has generated multiple patents licensed to leading global industrial partners. In addition to existing products, two additional patents have been successfully commercialised as new products, creating new industrial beneficiaries and enabling our technologies to reach millions of beneficiaries. Between 2020 and 2025, more than 7.5 million users adopted these solutions, creating substantial socio-economic value by improving eye health, reducing healthcare burdens, and generating billions in commercial benefits.

The impact extends beyond clinical use. The innovations are now included in myopia management guidelines, recognized by governments, and widely adopted in professional practice, helping to reshape eye care globally and improve outcomes for future generations.
