Summary

Following the success of the first celebration in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that the second World Food Safety Day (WFSD), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, will be celebrated on 7 June 2020 to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.

This year, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual events will be hold by bringing people together online. Under the theme “Food safety, everyone’s business”, the 2020 event will invite all stakeholders including countries and decision makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations and the general public to raise awareness about food safety and to highlight that everyone involved in food systems has a part to play. Food safety is a shared responsibility, particularly during this pandemic, all parties have to ensure that the crisis has not interrupted supply chains and that safe food remains available, contributing to the consumption of healthy diets: from the workers in the fields to those in the supermarkets and to all those preparing food for others and themselves.

WHO and FAO facilitate Member States’ efforts to celebrate WFSD 2020. Through this international day, WHO pursues its efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally.
