RILA transitions under new PolyU Aerospace Research Academy (PARA)

With effect from 1 July 2026, the COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) will be transferred to the newly established PolyU Aerospace Research Academy (PARA) as one of its constituent units.  PARA will serve as a strategic platform to advance the University’s strategic development in aerospace research by strengthening coordination, integration, technology transfer and collaboration with industry, government, and international partners. The Academy will also promote interdisciplinary research and talent development, with the aim of enhancing PolyU’s contribution to aerospace initiatives in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, the nation and globally. Within this broader aerospace ecosystem, RILA will continue to play its role in advancing research on large aircraft and explore opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations.  中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院正式轉移至香港理工大學航空航天高等研究院 自 2026 年 7 月 1 日起，中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院（RILA）將轉移至新成立的香港理工大學航空航天高等研究院（PARA）之下，作為其組成研究單位之一。 PARA 將作為策略平台，透過加強協調、整合、技術轉移，以及與業界、政府和國際夥伴的合作，推動理大在航空航天研究方面的策略發展。研究院亦將促進跨學科研究及人才培育，致力提升理大對香港、粵港澳大灣區、國家及全球航空航天發展的貢獻。在這遼闊的航空航天科研體系下，RILA 將繼續推動大飛機相關研究，並探索跨學科合作的機會。

Call for Potential Guidelines: 2026 Innovation Research Fund of COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft

The COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) is inviting submissions of potential guidelines for the 2026 Innovation Research Fund. This call is intended to solicit ideas and explore potential research directions and areas for the funding scheme.

The 2nd Board of Management Meeting of the COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft Held in Shenzhen

The 2nd Board of Management Meeting of the COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft was successfully held on 13 June 2026 in Shenzhen. The meeting brought together the leadership group, board members, representatives of the Academic Committee, and members of the Joint Administrative Committee to review the institute’s development and deliberate on the approval of the first batch of research projects under the Innovation Research Fund. At the meeting, appointments of board members were announced and updates on the Academic Committee and Joint Administrative Committee personnel were reported. A key agenda item was the review and approval of the first batch of projects under the Innovation Research Fund of COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft. The meeting also included progress reports on the institute’s work and the plan for the joint laboratory. It concluded with remarks from board representatives from both sides. Since its establishment, the COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft has continued to promote collaborative innovation and research cooperation in the field of large aircraft. The successful convening of this meeting, together with the start of the first batch of projects, marks another important step forward in building a high-level research platform, promoting the deep integration of industry, academia, and research, and supporting the national large aircraft strategy. Looking ahead, the institute will continue to leverage the strengths of COMAC and PolyU, bring together innovative talent and resources, and accelerate the application of research outcomes, making greater contributions to the high-quality development of China’s large aircraft. 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院第二次理事會會議在深圳順利舉行 2026年6月13日，中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院第二次理事會會議在深圳順利舉行。會議匯聚研究院相關領導、理事會成員、學術委員會代表及科研團隊成員，圍繞研究院發展及首批創新研究基金項目立項事宜進行審議與交流。 會上，宣讀了理事會成員任命文件，及通報了學術委員會及研究院人員調整情況。會議重點審議中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院創新研究基金首批項目立項事宜，聽取了研究院工作進展報告及聯合實驗室建設方案報告。隨後，理事代表、學術委員會代表先後發言，研究院理事長及領導小組組長作總結講話。 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院自成立以來，持續推動雙方在大飛機領域的協同創新與科研合作。此次本次會議的順利召開，以及首批項目將正式啟動，標誌著研究院在建設高水平科研平台、促進產學研深度融合及服務國家大飛機戰略方面邁出新的一步。未來，研究院將繼續發揮中國商飛與香港理工大學的各自優勢，凝聚創新力量，推動科研成果落地應用，為大飛機事業高質量發展作出更大貢獻。  

PolyU RILA Delegation Visits Universidad Politécnica de Madrid to Advance Collaboration in Aeronautical Engineering

On 29 May 2026, a delegation from the Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain, to further strengthen collaboration in aeronautical engineering education and research. During the visit, representatives from RILA and UPM held meetings on student and faculty mobility, the development of academic programmes and discipline-specific strengths, as well as opportunities for knowledge exchange and joint innovation, with the aim of identifying concrete modes of cooperation that support talent development, academic research and industry‑engaged initiatives. A university-level Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PolyU and UPM was also discussed as a framework for future collaboration in engineering education, research, and student exchange. The RILA delegation met with UPM’s leadership and academic staff to present PolyU’s research agenda, educational characteristics and international collaborations in large aircraft and aerospace‑related fields, while gaining a deeper understanding of UPM’s experience and strengths as a leading European institution in aeronautical engineering. Through face‑to‑face discussions and campus visits, the two institutions seek to lay the groundwork for collaboration in areas such as student exchanges, co‑supervision of research students, joint research projects and knowledge transfer activities, and to explore the feasibility of establishing long‑term, structured partnership frameworks. The visit enables RILA to further expand its global collaboration network, strengthen ties with top aerospace institutions in Europe and create new cross‑regional opportunities for research and talent development in large aircraft and advanced manufacturing technologies, thereby enhancing the Institute’s international profile in the aerospace community. 香港理工大學大飛機研究院代表訪問馬德里理工大學 推動航空工程教育與科研合作 2026年5月29日，香港理工大學大飛機研究院（RILA）代表團到訪西班牙馬德里理工大學（Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, UPM）航空與太空工程學院，圍繞航空工程相關的教育及科研合作展開深入交流。訪問期間，雙方就學生與教師交流與互訪安排、課程與學術發展方向，以及知識交流和聯合創新計劃等議題進行會談，探討未來在人才培養、學術研究及產學合作方面的具體合作模式。同時，雙方亦就理大與馬德里理工大學之間擬議簽署的大學層面合作備忘錄（MoU）進行討論，並將其視為日後在工程教育、科研合作及學生交流等方面推進合作的框架。 RILA 代表團與 UPM 的管理層及學術人員會面，介紹理大在大飛機及航空航天領域的研究布局、教學特色與國際合作經驗，同時了解 UPM 作為歐洲知名航空工程學府，在課程設計、科研平台及與業界合作等方面的優勢。透過面對面的討論與校園參訪，雙方期望為學生交換、研究生聯合指導、共同開展科研項目及推動知識轉移等合作奠定基礎，並探索建立長期、制度化合作機制的可行性。 是次到訪有助進一步拓展國際合作網絡，強化與歐洲頂尖航空航天院校的聯繫，為大飛機及相關高端製造技術的研究與人才培養創造更多跨地域合作機會，從而提升大飛機研究院在國際航空航天領域的影響力。

PolyU RILA Delegation Visits Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

On 14 May 2026, Prof. Chih‑Yung WEN, Director of the COMAC‑PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA), visited the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he met with representatives from the university's Research Institute for Large Aircraft to discuss collaboration in large‑aircraft research. During the visit, Prof. Wen and his delegation toured laboratories in the College of Energy and Power Engineering and the College of Aerospace Engineering. He also delivered an academic presentation on boundary layer transition and transition shock/boundary layer interaction research, while introducing The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the COMAC‑PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft. The visit has further strengthened academic ties between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the field of aerospace, and laid a solid foundation for closer collaboration on large aircraft and related frontier technologies. 香港理工大學大飛機研究院代表訪問南京航空航天大學 推動雙方學術交流 2026年5月14日，中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院（RILA）院長溫志湧教授訪問南京航空航天大學，並與該校大飛機研究院代表就大飛機研究領域的合作進行交流。 訪問期間，溫教授一行參觀了能源與動力學院及航空學院的實驗室，並作專題學術報告，題為「邊界層轉捩及轉捩激波／邊界層干擾研究的最新進展」，同時介紹香港理工大學及中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院的發展概況。 此次交流進一步加強了香港理工大學與南京航空航天大學在航空航天領域的學術聯繫，並為雙方在大飛機及相關前沿技術研究方面開展更深入合作奠定了良好基礎。  

Delegation Visit from COMAC-NUAA Research Institute for Large Aircraft

On 30 March 2026, a delegation from the COMAC-NUAA Research Institute for Large Aircraft visited The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for a series of tours, exchanges, and presentations. The delegation toured the Aviation Services Research Centre and the Aviation Engineering Laboratory. Subsequently, a Collaboration Agreement was signed between the COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft and the COMAC-NUAA Research Institute for Large Aircraft, and was witnessed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Senior Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and Prof. MAO Junkui, Director of the Science and Technology Department at NUAA.   During the meeting that followed, representatives from both institutes presented an overview of their respective developments. Prof. NG Kam Hung (AAE), Dr LV Jiaxin (ISE), and Dr ZENG Quanqing (ISE) delivered presentations on applications for the key projects under the 2025 Innovation Research Fund of COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft. During the open discussion session, both sides engaged in in-depth exchanges on potential collaborations in talent development, joint project applications, and the establishment of joint laboratories, to leverage complementary strengths and work together to contribute to the national large aircraft strategy. 中國商飛-南京航空航天大學大飛機研究院代表團來訪 2026年3月30日，中國商飛-南京航空航天大學大飛機研究院代表團到訪香港理工大學（理大），進行一系列參觀、交流及彙報活動。代表團先後參觀了航空服務研究中心及航空工程實驗室。隨後，中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院與中國商飛—南京航空航天大學大飛機研究院簽署合作協議，並由理大高級副校長（科研及創新）趙汝恒教授及南航科學技術研究院院長毛軍逵教授共同見證。會上，兩院代表分別介紹各自發展概況。此外，伍淦鴻教授(航空及民航工程學系)、呂佳欣博士(工業及系統工程學系)及曾泉清博士(工業及系統工程學系)分別就2025中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院創新研究基金項目申請（重點項目）作了彙報。自由討論環節中，雙方就人才培養、項目聯合申報及聯合實驗室建設等潛在合作領域深入交流，實現優勢互補，共同為國家大飛機戰略貢獻力量。

COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft holds the second academic committee meeting

The COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) successfully held its second Academic Committee Meeting—the first of 2026—on 10 February 2026 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen Research Institute. Academic Committee Members from COMAC and PolyU gathered to review project proposals under the 2025 Innovation Research Fund of COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft. A total of 14 project applications were presented, with committee members providing detailed evaluations, comments and scores. Following in-depth discussions, the Committee finalised recommendations on the selected proposals, paving the way for the next phase of collaborative research between COMAC and PolyU to advance large aircraft technologies. 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院成功舉辦第二次學術委員會會議 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院（RILA）於2026年2月10日在香港理工大學深圳研究院成功舉辦2026年度第一次學術委員會會議（總第二次）。 來自中國商飛公司及香港理工大學的學術委員會委員審議共14個2025中國商飛—香港理工大學大飛機研究院創新研究基金項目申請。委員們對各項目申請進行詳細評審、給予意見及分數。經過深入討論後，委員會對被選出的項目申請作出最終推薦，為雙方後續合作研究奠定基礎，進一步促進大飛機領域技術創新及學術科研深度融合。

2026 NSFC Large Aircraft Basic Research Joint Fund

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has released the 2026 Application Guide for the Large Aircraft Basic Research Joint Fund. The Fund focuses on fundamental theories and key core technologies in the field of large aircraft. COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft holds first academic committee meeting

The COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) held its inaugural Academic Committee Meeting at the PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute on 11 November 2025.  The meeting brought together experts from The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to review project guidelines and provide strategic guidance for RILA's development. The Committee evaluated multiple research initiatives across three key areas: intelligent design, precision manufacturing, and operation and maintenance. Following comprehensive discussions, the Committee approved several project guidelines to advance innovation in large-aircraft technology. The approved guidelines will be funded based on available resources and strategic priorities. The meeting marks an important step toward strengthening collaboration between COMAC and PolyU and advancing research excellence in China's large aircraft. 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院成功召開首次學術委員會會議 中國商飛－香港理工大學大飛機研究院於2025年11月11日在香港理工大學深圳研究院成功召開了首次學術委員會會議。 會議匯聚了來自中國商飛(商飛)及香港理工大學(理大)的專家學者，就研究項目指南進行評審，並為研究院的發展提供戰略指導。學術委員會評審了涵蓋智能設計、精密加工與製造及運行與維護三個方向的多項研究計劃。經過深入討論，委員會批准了多個推動大飛機技術創新的研究項目指南。獲批指南將根據資源配置及戰略優先順序獲得資助。會議標誌著商飛及理大在中國大飛機研究領域的合作邁向新階段。

PolyU delegation participated the 8th COMAC International Science and Innovation Week

The 8th Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) International Science and Technology Innovation Week, themed “Sky Link: Sustainable Aviation for the Future,” was launched at the Beijing Civil Aircraft Technology Research Center of COMAC on 8 September 2025. This year, the focus was on new-energy aircraft, artificial intelligence, the low-altitude economy, and the transformation of the air transport system. It brought together over 500 experts and stakeholders from government, academia, industry, research institutes, and industry associations across nine countries and regions. A delegation from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) participated in this event, including Professor Chih-Yung WEN, Chair Professor of Aeronautical Engineering and Director of the COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA); Professor Siyang ZHONG, Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering; as well as representatives from the PolyU Research and Innovation Office (RIO) and RILA. PolyU delegation took part in the opening ceremony, the SciTech and Young Talent Forum, and thematic seminars such as the Low‑Altitude Economy seminar, engaging in in‑depth discussions with representatives from leading institutions, including Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Khalifa University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, exploring opportunities for future collaboration.   第八屆COMAC國際科技創新周 以「Sky Link：面向未來的可持續航空」為主題的第八屆COMAC國際科技創新周，於9月8日在中國商用飛機有限責任公司（中國商飛）北京民用飛機技術研究中心開幕，聚焦新能源飛機、人工智能、低空經濟、航空運輸體系變革等專題，吸引來自各國家和地區政府、高校、企業、科研院所、客戶、行業協會等合作單位逾500名專家學者參與。   香港理工大學（理大）航空及民航工程學系航空工程講座教授 、中國商飛 –香港理工大學大飛機研究院（大飛機研究院）院長溫志湧教授，航空及民航工程學系助理教授鍾思陽教授 ，理大研究及創新事務處代表和大飛機研究院等代表受邀出席COMAC國際科技創新周，並在開幕式、科技創新與青年人才論壇、低空經濟主題研討會等專題活動現場，與西班牙馬德里理工大學、阿聯酋哈利法大學、北京理工大學、中國航空學會等機構代表深入交流，探討未來合作機遇。
