Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Collaborators,
Welcome to the Research Centre for Resources Engineering towards Carbon Neutrality (RCRE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
Traditional models of production, consumption, and waste disposal continue to drive up greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. The global climate crisis demands urgent, transformative actions. To confront these pressing challenges, RCRE was established in October 2021 with a clear, ambitious vision: to position PolyU as a world-leading hub for resourceful utilization of solid wastes and as a driving force in the global journey towards carbon neutrality.
True sustainability cannot be achieved in silos. RCRE brings together a vibrant, multi-disciplinary team of researchers from across PolyU’s diverse faculties. By blending expertise across engineering, science, policy, and economics, we are uniquely equipped to tackle the lifecycle of waste from every angle.
Our core research expertise is built around four pillars:
• Policy and Society: Evaluating and shaping waste management policies that drive behavioral and systemic change.
• Environmental and Economic Impact Assessment: Utilizing life cycle assessments (LCA) and cost analyses to ensure our solutions are both ecologically viable and economically sustainable.
• Waste Valorization Technology: Developing cutting-edge technologies that transform waste into high-value resources.
• Recycling and Sustainable Construction: Engineering eco-friendly materials and infrastructure solutions to build the circular cities of tomorrow.
Innovation thrives on partnership. We actively welcome passionate new members, visionary researchers, and industrial partners to join us. Whether you are looking to collaborate on groundbreaking research, adopt our innovative waste recycling/upcycling technologies, or share ideas, we invite you to connect with us.
Together, let us turn waste into resources, and turn commitment into impacts!
With warm regards,
Prof. Chunbao Charles XU
