Inauguration of the Research Centre for Resources Engineering towards Carbon Neutrality

The RCRE Inauguration Ceremony was held on 14 January 2022 on the PolyU campus. Over 100 guests from the Hong Kong Government, PolyU, the industry and the Centre’s research partners attended physically or online and witnessed this new page. “Our campus is working hard on achieving the goal of carbon neutrality before 2050. RCRE fits very well into this arena and its research work will add great value to helping not only PolyU but the whole community to achieve this target that can benefit our society in a meaningful way,” said PolyU’s Vice President (Research and Innovation) Professor Christopher Chao at the inauguration ceremony. Speaking at the same occasion, Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, stated that PolyU now has the largest research team and facilities among all the universities in Hong Kong focusing on resources engineering towards carbon neutrality, and has established a strong track record and recognised reputation in the waste management research community. PolyU will advance further with the establishment of RCRE for the good of the society. Attending the ceremony online, Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, commended PolyU for its contribution and efforts to pool its interdisciplinary talents and facilities to advance the development of decarbonisation technologies and related policy study. The ceremony also featured a fruitful scientific exchange by different PolyU and overseas researchers who presented on a kaleidoscope of topics. Poster presentations on current projects conducted by PolyU researchers were also staged and attracted the attention of all the attending guests at the spot.

Carbon Neutrality Gambit: Field Trip & Innovation Challenge 2022

RCRE organized a three-day student event called “Carbon Neutrality Gambit”. The event focus on the group competition and idea generation towards the carbon-neutral future. Winner will get internship opportunities with leading professors in RCRE.

CLP Lab Tour

A group of 8 members from CLP visited RCRE laboratory on 26 November 2021 (Fri). After the lab tour, Prof. C.S. Poon also gave a brief presentation about RCRE, introducing our background, vision and research directions.

RCRE Co-organized Webinar: Recycling of Waste Tyre Rubber into Sustainable Low-Noise Rubberized Asphalt Pavement

RCRE Associate Director, Dr. Zhen Leng, delivered a webinar with the topic of “Recycling of Waste Tyre Rubber into Sustainable Low-Noise Rubberized Asphalt Pavement” on 17 November 2021. The webinar is co-organized by CEE of PolyU, HKIE Civil Division, RCRE, and Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation (HKIHT). It attracted more than 500 registrations and more than 380 participants joined the webinar online. Dr. Leng started the presentation with the introduction to different low-noise road surfacing technologies and different rubberized asphalt technologies, and then focused on over ten years’ local experience on developing low-noise asphalt rubber pavement with low construction emission. After the presentation, a 15-min Q/A session was conducted with active discussion between the participants and speaker.

PolyU CEE Webinar Series Co-organized by RCRE

RCRE is co-organizing the PolyU CEE webinar on the topic of Recycling of Waste Tyre Rubber into Sustainable Low-Noise Rubberized Asphalt Pavement on 17 November 2021 (Wed). This webinar is co-organized by CEE of PolyU, HKIE Civil Division, RCRE, and Hong Kong Institute of Highway and Transportation. Dr. Zhen Leng, Associate Director of RCRE, will be the speaker of the webinar. Please refer to the webinar poster for more details.

Successful Application of Green Tech Fund by RCRE Member Prof. Daniel C.W. Tsang

The project of RCRE Member Prof. Daniel C.W. Tsang, Professor of CEE, titled “Biochar-enhanced Construction Materials for Sustainable Waste Management and Decarbonisation” was awarded the Green Tech Fund (GTF) with the grant of HK$8,784,200.  It is one of the eight approved research and development (R&D) projects in Hong Kong. The Government set up the GTF of HK$200 million in 2020 to provide better and more focused funding support for R&D projects for achieving decarbonisation and improving environmental protection in Hong Kong towards its goal of carbon neutrality before 2050. The GTF was open for the first round of applications from Dec 2020 to Feb 2021 and received over 190 submissions. Successful Application of Lantau Conservation Fund by RCRE Director Prof. C.S. Poon

The project titled “Enhancement of marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning along Lantau eco-shoreline with low-pH sea-sand seawater eco-engineered seawall panels” led by RCRE Director Prof. C.S. Poon, Head of CEE, was approved under the Lantau Conservation Fund (LCF) with the grant of HK$2,269,000.      The LCF is set up to promote and implement conservation of Lantau, and to carry out minor local improvement works in remote villages and communities in support of conservation initiatives.  It is anticipated that the LCF will improve the environmental capacity, conserve the cultural character and enhance the sustainable development of Lantau.

MESAT Webinar

MESAT Webinar Delivered by RCRE Associate Director, Dr. Zhen Leng

RCRE Associate Director, Dr. Zhen Leng, was invited to deliver a presentation in the webinar organized by Khalifa University and co-sponsored by The Middle East Society of Asphalt Technologies on the theme of Waste Plastic Modified Asphalt Binders and Mixtures on October 14, 2021. In this webniar, Dr. Leng shared his research about Chemical Recycling of Waste PET into Paving Asphalt as a Functionalized Additive. The webinar was well attended by around 150 participants from different countries around the world.
