Dr Song CHENG (ME) delivered a webinar with the topic of “Toward Net-Zero Air Travel via the Take-Up of Sustainable Aviation Fuels: Fundamental Characterizations and Application-Oriented Implementations” on 28 March 2024. The webinar was co-organized with CEE of PolyU and HKIE Environmental Division. Over 100 participants joined the webinar.

FHKI Visit

Delegation Visit of Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) to RCRE

A delegation of FHKI including Prof. Karen Chan, JP (Council member of PolyU) visited the RCRE on 15 March 2024.   During the lab visit, Ir Prof. Chi-sun Poon (Director of RCRE) introduced various low-carbon construction materials such as foam glass-based lightweight concrete, superhydrophobic lightweight foam concrete, sustainable permeable concrete for urban drainage, and the process of turning concrete waste into low carbon products by carbonation technology. Dr Jacky Chung (RCRE member) introduced 3D concrete printing technology and products to the delegates.

PAIR IAC Members Visit

RCRE hosted a Lab Tour for PAIR IAC Members

Four members of the International Advisory Committee of PAIR visited the RCRE laboratory on 8 March 2024. During the lab visit, Ir Prof. Chi-sun Poon (Director of RCRE) and Dr Shipeng Zhang (RCRE member) introduced some low-carbon construction materials such as foam glass-based lightweight concrete, superhydrophobic lightweight foam concrete, sustainable permeable concrete for urban drainage, and 3D concrete printing technology to the IAC members.

Dr Amber Jiachi CHIOU (FSN) delivered a webinar with the topic of “Development of Low Carbon Glass-based Architectural Products with Durable Antimicrobial Potential and Beyond” on 26 February 2024. It was co-organized with CEE of PolyU and HKIE Civil Division. Over 160 participants joined the webinar.

GTF Projects

RCRE Members secure a Total Grant of HK$14.09 million in the Third Round of Green Tech Fund

Congratulations to Dr LEU Shao-yuan, Ben, Dr LI Meng-jung, Molly and Dr SHOU Dahua, whose projects have been awarded a total grant of HK$14.09 million in the third round of Green Tech Fund of the Environment and Ecology Bureau, Hong Kong SAR. A total of eight projects were approved in this round of exercise, and PolyU is one of the local universities with the highest number of approved projects. The three green technology projects are:   Project Title: Study of ammonia pretreatment – power generation system toward complete valorization of food waste digestate Project Coordinator: Dr LEU Shao-yuan, Ben (Management Committee Member of RCRE) Funding Awarded: HK$6,870,100   Project Title: The first intelligent ammonia-powered zero-carbon versatile-energy supply station, NH3-VESS Project Coordinator: Dr LI Meng-jung, Molly (Member of RCRE) Funding Awarded: HK$4,613,800   Project Title: Development of multi-functional building clothing using textile waste for energy saving and waste reduction Project Coordinator: Dr SHOU Dahua (Member of RCRE) Funding Awarded: HK$2,606,000

Diocesan Grils School Visit

RCRE hosted a Lab Tour for Diocesan Girls’ School

Five students and their teacher from Diocesan Girls’ School visited Ir Prof. Chi-sun Poon (Director of RCRE) and the RCRE laboratory on 18 January 2024.   During the lab visit, Ir Prof. Poon introduced various low-carbon construction materials such as glass-based green concrete, foam glass-based lightweight concrete, sustainable permeable concrete, and the process of turning concrete waste into low carbon products by carbonation, etc. to the students.

Delegation Visit of Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) to RCRE

A delegation of 9 senior members from CEDD including Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Ir Michael Fong, and Deputy Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Ir Harry Ma, visited the RCRE laboratory on 18 January 2024.   During the lab tour, Ir Prof. Chi-sun Poon (Director of RCRE) introduced various low-carbon construction materials such as foam glass-based lightweight concrete, superhydrophobic lightweight foam concrete, sustainable permeable concrete for urban drainage, etc. to the delegates.

RCRE Member awarded HK$5.41 million from RGC Collaborative Research Fund

Congratulations to Prof. Yuhong Wang, whose project titled “Improving the health and stability of roadside trees in compact urban development through novel road systems and tree root “training” has been awarded $5.41 million funding by RGC Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2023/24.

Prof CS Poon Aramco Funding

RCRE Director’s Team secures RMB1.5 million from Aramco to conduct Carbon Neutrality Research

Congratulations to Ir Prof. Chi Sun Poon (RCRE Director), Dr Peiliang Shen (RCRE member) and Mr. Zhenjiang Gu, whose project titled “Turning Recycled Concrete Powders into High-value-added Products by Advanced Carbonation” has been awarded RMB1.5 million funding by Aramco to conduct carbon neutrality research. The project was selected from over 30 applications to win the Aramco Sustainability Techno-Quest: Carbon Footprint Reduction through Alternate Sequestration. Organized by Aramco, The Sustainability Techno-Quest is a research and development (R&D) competition attempts to engage researchers in proposing relevant R&D projects across CO2 solidification and CO2 to oilfield chemicals. It focuses on sustainability and specifically the concept of alternate sequestration, where captured CO2 may be converted to and/or incorporated into materials.
