In the ninth round of Research Grants Council Theme-based Research Scheme 2019/20, a smart fire project led by Prof. Asif Sohail Usmani of the Department of Building Services Engineering has been awarded a research grant of more than HK$30 million. Entitled “SureFire: Smart Urban Resilience and Firefight”, the project will bring together a multi-disciplinary team of local and international researchers, a government agency and multiple high-tech companies to conduct foundational research on fire prediction, prevention and control, and emergency management as well as develop a smart firefighting system for use in highly densely populated urban environment.

 

PolyU will also participate in two other approved theme-based research projects, namely “A Paradigm-shifting, Fully-integrated, Compact Wastewater-to-resource Facility” and “Research and Development of Artificial Intelligence in Extraction and Identification of Spoken Language Biomarkers for Screening and Monitoring of Neurocognitive Disorders”.
