IEEE TENCON 2022(IEEE Region 10旗艦會議)於2022年11月1-4日順利舉行 (只有英文版本)

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest technical professional organization. As Technical Programme co-chair, Prof. Changyuan YU co-organized IEEE TENCON 2022 (IEEE Region 10 flagship conference) and it was successfully held on 1-4 November 2022 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, including one-day invited advanced photonics workshop on 3 November 2022.   IEEE Region 10 Conference (TENCON) is the annual flagship technical event of IEEE Region 10. This TENCON conference series has gain considerable interests among researchers, academicians, professionals, and students in the Asia-Pacific Region, covering all over technical areas related to IEEE.   Photonics Research Institute’s core members were also invited to deliver a speech during the invited advanced photonics workshop on 3 November 2022. 光子技術研究院成員的研究成果 - 用於無標記生物檢測的超小型光纖尖端直接印刷等離子體生物傳感器 (只有英文版本)

Congratulations to PRI core members, Prof. Zhang Aping and Prof. Tam Hwa Yaw, their paper was published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics (impact factor: 10.61).   Research Topic: Ultraminiature optical fiber-tip directly-printed plasmonic biosensors for label-free biodetection   Abstracts:   Miniaturization of biosensors has become an imperative demand because of its great potential in in vivo biomarker detection and disease diagnostics as well as the point-of-care testing for coping with public health crisis, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Here, we present an ultraminiature optical fiber-tip biosensor based on the plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly printed upon the end face of a standard multimode optical fiber at visible light range. An in-situ precision photoreduction technology is developed to additively print the micropatterns of size-controlled AuNPs. The AuNPs reveal distinct localized surface plasmon resonance, whose peak wavelength provides an ideal spectral signal for label-free biodetection. The fabricated optical fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor can not only detect antibody, but also test SARS-CoV-2 mimetic DNA sequence at the concentration level of 0.8 pM. Such an ultraminiature fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor offers a cost-effective biodetection technology for a myriad of applications ranging from point-of-care testing to in vivo diagnosis of stubborn diseases.   Please click Here for details.

李明杰博士帶領的跨學科團隊開發了具有增強多重激子效應的鹵化物鈣鈦礦納米晶體

多重激子效應是指半導體吸收一個光子而產生兩個甚至多個電子電洞對的過程,對於發展新型太陽能電池及高性能光電子器件至為重要。在光電轉換的過程中,如果光子的能量超過了電子電洞對所需的能量,多餘的能量會以熱能的形式消耗掉。如何能有效地利用熱耗散這部分能量來提高光電轉換效率並產生多重激子效應,是有待解決的難題。   最近,應用物理學系及光子技術研究院成員李明杰博士帶領的跨學科團隊開發了具有增強多重激子效應的鹵化物鈣鈦礦納米晶體。通過合理設計的納米晶體 (或稱為量子點) 能將高能光子轉化為多個電子電洞對,突破光電轉換效率的極限。更重要的是團隊首次證明了使用這種新設計的納米晶體,內部量子效率在低閾值下能超過 100%。 這項研究獲刊載於高影響力的科技期刊《Nature Photonics》。李博士的研究不單加深了人們對多重激子效應的認識,同時為開發高效能的光捕獲技術,例如光伏、光子探測和太陽能燃料生產等,提供了重要的參考依據。   請按此了解更多詳情 (只有英文版本)。

郝建華教授團隊獲國家自然科學基金(NSFC)重點項目資助 (只有英文版本)

The Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the application results of the 2022 Exercise in September 2022. Prof. Jianhua Hao’s project is successfully funded by the Key Program of NSFC. As PC/PI, Prof. Hao will collaborate the researchers in Nankai University and Sichuan Normal University, China to perform the study of multifunctional ultrathin ferroelectric integrated materials and devices towards neuromorphic computing and human visual system. Artificial intelligence is the frontier field with significant societal impact. However, the present technologies cannot sufficiently meet the needs of supporting the future information society in terms of information transmission bandwidth, power consumption, processing speed and intelligent control. Particularly, the rapid development of neuromorphic computing and artificial vision system urgently call for the innovation in multifunctional integrated materials and devices. On a basis of the Prof. Hao's internationally recognized works regarding ferroelectric manipulation of rare-earth-doped luminescence and ferroelectric optoelectronics, the proposed study is to effectively integrate ferroelectric polarization with multifunctional characteristics of electronic properties of semiconductor, photodetection and rare-earth ion luminescence. Novel synaptic devices with multi-modes will be demonstrated. 光子技術研究院成員獲批2022年國家「優秀青年科學基金項目」資助 (只有英文版本)

Dr Tommy Minchen WEI, PRI management committee member, has been awarded the China's Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2022 (Hong Kong and Macau) for his research “Colour Appearance Model and Colour Space” with a total amount of RMB 2 million.  The awarded project “Colour Appearance Model and Colour Space” aims to investigate colour appearance and difference under complicated conditions. Dr Wei, has carried out research on the fundamentals of colour science and developed advanced algorithms and solutions for various imaging systems to address industrial needs, improving the user experience.   The Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) aims to support young scholars (under the age of 38 for male or 40 for female) who have attained achievements in basic research and conducted innovative research in their chosen fields, fostering them to be internationally leading scholars.

李剛教授獲頒2022/23研究資助局高級研究學者 (只有英文版本)

PRI Management Committee Member, Prof. LI Gang, has been awarded one of the ten grants under the Research Grants Council's (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme 2022/23.   Prof. Li Gang, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering Research Project: “Printable Organic Solar Cells: Materials and Device Investigations towards Applications”   Organic solar cell (OSC) is an emerging photovoltaic (PV) technology with distinct advantages in many areas, such as flexible/portable PV, building integrated PV and transparent power applications. Aiming at accelerating the OSC technology, this project proposed systematic materials and device structure investigation of new photoactive materials, stable transport materials, innovative ternary OSC active layer engineering, a novel approach for transparent OSC and printing technology. The project will significantly push forward OSC technology in terms of high efficiency, operation stability, compatibility with unique applications and being printing friendly. The proposed research represents a new frontier for OSC technology, which integrates chemistry, physics and material science to generate new perspectives in science and come up with solutions to challenging issues in renewable energy.   The RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme aims to provide sustained support to exceptionally outstanding researchers at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong, with a view to facilitating their dedication to research and development and to helping universities attract and retain research talent. The Scheme provides ten grants to scholars from any academic disciplines in each round of the annual exercise. Nominees are assessed based on various criteria that include leadership quality and vision in the chosen area of research, the merit of the research proposal and the support provided by the university.

PRI Member, Dr TSANG Yuen Hong, won the second prize of 2021-2022 Science and Technology Innovation Award of The China Society for the Promotion of Science and Technology Commercialization (CSPSTC).   Project Title: High beam quality, highly stable output power ultrafast laser (高光束質量、高穩定輸出功率超快激光器)   Name of Collaborating Organisations: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Shenzhen University Shenzhen United Winners Laser Co.,Ltd.   The CSPSTC aims to build a technology service platform in order to optimize the technology development environment and create a good atmosphere to promote the in-depth development of technology finance, also promote the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements and scientific and technological progress, and enhance innovation capacity and business competitiveness.   We take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Tsang for his achievements.   Please click here for more information about the list of awardees.
