Fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering delivers distinguished lecture on biomanufacturing of functional tissues and organs (只有英文版本)

Prof. YANG Huayong, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Zhejiang University and Fellow of Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered the 12th PAIR Distinguished Lecture titled “Biomanufacturing of Functional Tissues and Organs: Exploration and Progress” on 2 January 2024. The hybrid lecture attracted over 130 participants joining in person and online from more than 20 countries and regions across Australia, Asia, Europe and North America. It was also broadcast live on multiple social media platforms, captivating a viewing online audience of over 14,500. The lecture commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PAIR, followed by a brief speaker introduction by Prof. WANG Zuankai, Associate Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU. In his presentation, Prof. Yang highlighted that urgent need for tissue/organ biomanufacturing owing to the shortage of donation for organ transplantation. He pointed out some challenges in the in vitro manufacturing of tissues/organs, particularly in relation to accurate design, precise fabrication, and functional induction, which underscore the imperative need for new methods for tissue/organ manufacturing. Next, Prof. Yang outlined the development roadmap of biomanufacturing and shared specific examples demonstrating the research progress in 3D bioprinting. In concluding his presentation, Prof. Yang shared his insights on the future direction for biomanufacturing, as well as some significant accomplishments by him and his team at Zhejiang University in the field. A question-and-answer session moderated by Prof. Wang was followed. Both the online and on-site audience had a fruitful discussion with Prof. Yang.

理大學者獲香港Web 3.0標準化協會委任

旅遊業數字化轉型研究中心正式成立

碳中和資源工程研究中心隊伍勝出「沙特阿美永續發展科技探究」競賽

碳中和資源工程研究中心主任潘智生教授、成員申培亮博士組成的團隊，憑其研發項目計劃書，勝出沙特阿美舉辦的「永續發展科技探究」競賽。獲獎項目「透過高碳化將再生混凝土粉末轉化為高附加價值產品」，從 30 多個申請項目中脫穎而出，並獲人民幣150萬元資助，以支持項目推行。 競賽以「透過替代封存減少碳足跡」為主題，邀請全國學術界、研究機構、服務業和工業界的研究人員和研究小組，就「二氧化碳固化」和「二氧化碳轉化為油田化學品」提交研發建議書。

理大「轉廢為能」技術獲傳媒報導　助建築業大幅減排

理大跨領域團隊合作　推學校精神健康推廣項目

理大精神健康研究中心暫任主任丶康復治療科學系講座教授及系主任兼精神健康研究中心暫任主任曾永康教授於《明報》撰文，倡推動師生家校聯合校本模式，促進學生精神健康。 曾教授於文中分享，理大康復科學系研究團隊從2009年至今一直致力研究如何以學校環境為基礎，經濟有效地促進校園精神健康的提升。該團隊獲得香港優質教育基金的3次研究撥款，在129間小學和82間中學開展「關注及改善教師身心健康」項目。此項綜合性項目從身心兩方面提供健康相關的資訊，並聯合多專業領域人士，包括職業治療師、物理治療師及營養師，照顧教師的社會心理健康、生理健康和營養健康，共有超過2500名教師參與項目，並有超過600名教師直接受惠。 他亦提到，理大團隊在連續幾年的學校精神健康推廣項目中積累了豐富經驗，同時也深切體會到要促進學生的精神健康，學校和家庭、教師和家長的共同參與缺一不可。團隊根據在教師人群中的成功經驗，提出了師生家校聯合的校本模式來促進學生的精神健康。   閱讀更多： 明報 - https://polyu.me/3H0e2fU

未來食品研究院成員接受星島專訪　談發酵蛋白科研發展

香港理工大學未來食品研究院成員兼食品科學與營養學系研究助理教授常金輝博士，及該系助理教授趙丹玥博士，早前接受星島日報專訪，講解本地發酵蛋白的科研發展與前景 。 常博士指，香港關於可食用發酵蛋白（不包括醫藥用途的蛋白）的研究和產業都不算多，雖然香港在新食品原料的規管方面較為寬鬆，但市場規模小，消費者對新型蛋白的接受度較低，難以支撐起需要靠規模效益降低成本的食用蛋白。 另一方面，趙博士提到，一般發酵工業需用到較大的空間、設備成本也高，而且因涉及排氣、降溫等程序，對安全管理和能源供應有較高標準，香港較難做到。不需要加熱的藻類發酵，相對可較小規模進行。藻類發酵可轉化營養物成為高質量蛋白，亦可轉化為其他營養素如胡蘿蔔素等，「性價比」較高。   網上報導： 星島日報 - https://lnkd.in/gDCtyptZ

WASCON2023 – Hong Kong

The 11th International Conference on the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials (WASCON2023) was successfully held from 13th to 16th December 2023 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The conference was jointly organized by the International Society for the Environmental and Technical Implications of Construction with Alternative Materials (ISCOWA), the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Research Centre for Resources Engineering towards Carbon Neutrality (RCRE) of PolyU. With the theme of "Innovative Valorization of Alternative Materials and Waste towards Circular Construction”, more than 160 papers were presented at the conference and they covered the full spectrum of topics related to the theme. We were honoured to have Prof. Christopher Cheeseman from Imperial College London, Mr Simo Hakkarainen from Peikko Group Corporation, Prof. Baoshan Huang from University of Tennessee – Knoxville, Dr Harn-wei Kua from National University of Singapore, Prof. Zhichao Liu from Wuhan University of Technology, Prof. Chi Sun Poon from PolyU, Dr Hirofumi Sakanakura from National Institute for Environmental Studies, Prof. Julia Stegemann from University College London, and Prof. Dongmin Wang from China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing) as our keynote speakers to share their valuable insights in the field. Their contributions have enriched our knowledge in turning wastes into recycled materials in construction. In addition, we had around 300 participants from academia, industry, and government joining from all over the world, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mainland China, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States. The conference served as an effective platform for sharing insights on new directions for research and innovative solutions to emerging problems and challenges relating to utilization of alternative materials and wastes in construction. To enhance the overall experience, technical visits to Y·PARK, WEEE·PARK, T·PARK and CIC iHub were organized. The participants have learnt about the process of recycling of yard waste into useful materials at Y·PARK, recovering useful materials from the electrical and electronic appliances through various physical processes at WEEE·PARK, burning sludge and using the excess heat energy to generate electricity for the entire plant’s operation and the public power grid at T·PARK, the knowledge of construction innovation at CIC iHub. The participants found the tours were an eye-opening and fruitful exploration. 李銘源教授促香港成立中醫藥專科學院
