Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation (J.C.DISI)

Established in 2012, J.C.DISI is a catalyst for transformative social change. We serve as a strategic vehicle advancing the University's commitment to social responsibility through human-centered approaches to society's most pressing challenges. We are dedicated to driving social innovation through the “Inno for Good” strategic framework, which focuses on six key innovation streams:

J.C.DISI operates on following main action areas:

ASCEND Tech for Good Scheme

The “ASCEND (Advancing Social innovation through Collaborative Enterprise for Next-gen Digital inclusion) Tech for Good Scheme” is an initiative that empowers youth-led startups to develop sustainable business models addressing digital equity issues in smart city development. As a cornerstone of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust’s “Smart Teens Action” Project, ASCEND cultivates inclusive tech leaders who will shape Hong Kong’s equitable smart city future.

Shaw STEAMS for Good Programme

J.C.DISI has been supported by The Shaw Foundation to launch a 5-year “Shaw STEAMS for Good” Programme, designing novel I&T teaching activities for upper primary and junior secondary students. It has adopted STEAMS, a pioneering concept in education which integrates “Social” components, such as social innovation and design thinking, into the framework of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education. It aims to encourage students and educators to actively engage with and bring positive impact to society by leveraging their knowledge, taking forward the aspiration of “Education for Good.”

Transdisciplinary Research and Collaboration

Through transdisciplinary research and collaboration with external organisations and PolyU academic units, including Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Applied Social Sciences, School of Design, School of Optometry, etc., J.C.DISI aims at creating evidence-based social and academic impacts, as well as fostering knowledge transfer in the community.
