ISE Student is the Champion in the HKIE Student Project Competition
Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) student Mr Siu Pui Hin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) won the ‘HKIE Manufacturing & Industrial Division Student Project Competition 2015-2016’, an open competition that attracted participating teams from the major Hong Kong universities in June 2016. This competition is an annual event organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) to recognize the project handling skills and creativity of students studying in disciplines related to manufacturing and industrial engineering, and it is highly competitive, with two rounds of selection processes to screen out the top three projects.
Mr Siu, a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Industrial and Systems Engineering in the PolyU, won the competition with the project entitled "Towards an Effective In-Person Delivery System with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle", which was supervised by Dr Velvet Chen.
The project proposes a new methodology of increasing UAV localization accuracy and develops an UAV-based delivery system that can perform direct to-the-person delivery. In particular, algorithms have been designed to fuse the GPS signals with an on-board Bluetooth signal for UAV control and navigation. Moreover, other possibilities have been explored for achieving dynamic QR code reading and recognition with a flying UAV.
