High-power LED products, ranging from LED stage lighting to residential applications of recessed LED lighting, create the highest demand for LED thermal management beyond the capabilities of an LED heat sink. The PCB Technology Centre of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has developed a cost-effective and electrically insulating but highly thermal-conducting (10.4 times higher than that of traditional FR4) PCB substrate with a LED thermal management design that meets the power LED application demand. Infrared thermal imaging shows that the temperature (TLED) of a high-power LED is lowered by 12.5 oC, which prolongs the LED’s useful life by approximately 21,000 hours. The heat-dissipating solution can be integrated virtually into any LED product.
