Research for Sustainable Development

Overview of Research Projects

Bringing together world-class researchers from across the University, PolyU offers a vibrant, creative, and intellectually-stimulating environment that is conducive to sustainability research and innovation. We host many strategic, problem-oriented projects on a host of sustainability topics which include energy, air quality, water treatment and conservation, noise control, resource recycling and waste management, waste water treatment and renewable energy.

Research projects conducted by our faculties, schools, and various research units are supported by funds allocated by the University, other research grants, and external sources. In 2017/18, we delivered a number of society- and sustainability-related projects, including eco-friendly road technologies, smart city tree management, energy harvesting textiles, special lenses that slow myopia progression, and a monitoring system for elderly people with dementia. PolyU is also home to two sustainability-themed research centres including the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development and the Sustainability Management Research Centre, both of which gather experts from different disciplines who use their expertise to tackle specific sustainability challenges.
