The 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

At the forefront of technological innovation, PolyU’s research teams won ten top awards at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, held between 11 and 15 April 2018 in Switzerland. These included the Grand Prize (overall championship), one Grand Award, three Special Gold Medals, four Gold Medals and one Special Merit Award. One of the winning projects – the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) Spectacle Lens for Myopia Control – which is a spectacle lens to slow the progression of short-sightedness in children, beat 800 other entries around the world and was awarded the Grand Prize – the top honor of the event.

Scalable All-Textile Energy Harvesters for Electric Power Generation

This winning project won the Gold Medal with Congratulations of Jury at the expo. Invented by Dr Xu Bin-gang, this textile energy harvester captures mechanical energy which is broadly wasted in the environment and converts it into electricity. This energy harvester can be economically fabricated with commercial textile machines and can be broadly used as wearable power sources and applied in portable and wearable devices.

eNightLog – Nighttime Monitoring System for Caring for Elderly People with Dementia

Invented by Ir Prof. Zheng Yong-ping, this invention received the Gold Medal at the expo. Targeting an ageing population, eNightLog can gather data on vital signs, sleep quality, falls and behavioral problems as it tracks nighttime events. The system has numerous applications for caregivers, helping them to monitor and care for elderly people and dementia patients.

The State Technological Innovation Award 2017

On 8 January 2018, Prof. Poon Chi-sun’s research on turning waste into eco-friendly construction materials was awarded the Second Class Prize at the State Technological Innovation Awards.

Reimagine Education Awards 2018

Two of PolyU’s Service-Learning and leadership education subjects, the “Promotion of Children and Adolescent Development” Service-Learning subject and the “Tomorrow’s Leaders” leadership education subject, respectively received a Gold Award in the Sustainability category and a Silver Award in the Ethical Leadership category at the Reimagine Education Awards. PolyU is the first institution in the world to receive four awards within two years in these categories, and we will continue to work to excel in innovating and enhancing the learning experience for all our students.

Caring Organization

Receiving the Certificate of Recognition for a Caring Organization for the fourth year in a row, PolyU is once again recognized for our contributions and commitment to actualizing social responsibility. The University will continue to support the community and provide volunteering services, continue to care for our employees to ensure their well-being, and continue to promote environmental protection and education.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Certification

PolyU strives to provide a pleasant working and learning environment for all our staff and students. Since 2014, we have participated in the voluntary IAQ Certification Scheme in order to pursue best IAQ management practices. During the reporting year, we once again received the Certificate of Top 10 Highest Participation Rate and Good Class of IAQ, awarded for 35 PolyU buildings and areas.
