World Environment Day (5 June)

The United Nations designates 5 June as World Environment Day in 1972. Two years later, the day is celebrated for the first time under the slogan “Only One Earth”. It is a day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment and has become the most renowned day for environmental action. The day has a new theme each year and is celebrated in many ways with a different host country annually.

Why is it so important?

In the general sense, the environment consists of all kinds of biological and abiotic elements, processes and events. Humans and the environment are dependent on each other. Nevertheless, human activities and bad habits are exerting negative impacts on the environment and destroying nature. Year after year, World Environment Day throws light on some pressing environmental issues. It calls for action from people of different sections of society to do something for the environment so that their collective efforts can have a positive impact on the environment.

What should we do?

There are many different activities and actions that we can do. Through effecting changes in our daily habits, bringing in good practices to reduce our carbon footprint, making a commitment to do things differently to benefit the environment, we can all become agents to encourage environmental responsibility and the conservation of natural resources. It’s good for every one of us to learn how all living things on Earth are connected in the web of life, and how we can commit to advocacy and action and spread the word on caring our planet.
