Workshops on benefits of repurposing and upcycling

5 May 2021

Campus Sustainability Office has been at the forefront of sustainability education across the PolyU campuses. It organises activities and workshops regularly and strives to make the entire campus community see sustainability as part of their daily lives by changing their consumption habits and adopting a greener lifestyle. It is believed that in addition to building skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, all of us should also aspire to do something to make the world a better place.

Sustainability boils down to using resources wisely to ensure the ongoing capacity to maintain life and provide for future generations. The Campus Sustainability Office organised two online workshops in March 2021, providing engaging content and hands-on experience to campus participants about saving resources. By leading through examples, these workshops guided the participants through the process of awareness, understanding, and action.

Some people like to have a nice cup of coffee every morning. There are some smart and creative ideas to reuse coffee grounds that we can follow, and we can then save them for household uses instead of sending them directly to the trash bins. A captivating workshop was conducted online that taught participants the skills to turn used coffee grounds into helpful exfoliating and anti-inflammatory body scrubs by mixing coffee grounds with coconut oil. The rough texture of the coffee grounds works well on our skin, and coffee scrubs add a glow to our skin and gives a good scent.

Denim jeans are common in our wardrobes, and we can give more thoughts to help our old jeans find their new life. An interesting workshop was held online to share some practical tips to repurpose unwanted denim jeans and save them from becoming unnecessary waste. It offered participants a lesson on turning old denim into mug pads in a nicely handcrafted way.

Through a hands-on and practical approach, these workshops provided concrete examples and ideas for reusing and repurposing daily items we would normally throw away. It is all about our small actions to reduce the overflowing waste present in the landfills and our mindset about treasuring every item and all resources on the earth. It is about the beauty of leading a sustainable and simple lifestyle.
