UG Summer Research Abroad Sponsorship (USRA)

UG research programmes have been around for a long time, which enhance students’ learning experience and nurture the next generation of researchers/scholars. To align with the University’ strategic direction to provide international learning experience, GEO has sought the support from PolyU International Exchange and Partnership Fund and established the UG Summer Research Abroad Sponsorship Scheme (USRA).

USRA is a signature student learning scheme, which aims to provide financial support to encourage students to undertake research under the guidance and supervision of academics in overseas pre-eminent universities.

International Competition & Conference Participation Scheme (ICCPS)

The subsidy scheme encourages and supports PolyU full-time students to participate in international competitions and conferences with the aim of enhancing students’ global outlook and multicultural competency.

The Scheme can subsidize up to 2/3 of expenses needed. For events involves overseas travel, direct expenses like flight, accommodation, registration fee, visa, required vaccination, etc. will be covered. For virtual events, registration fee and cost incurred from materials required will be covered.

*Note: Due to the uncertainty amid the COVID-19 development worldwide, sponsorship will be considered for virtual events which take place before 31 October 2021. ICCPS of these rounds support students who present in conferences or compete in competitions (without overseas travel).

Study Abroad Fund

To encourage PolyU undergraduate students taking up various Study Abroad Activities available, Global Engagement Office (GEO) offers 2020-21 Study Abroad Fund (SAF) to support credit bearing or formally assessed learning activities that enhance students’ global outlook and multicultural competency. Such activity should be related to the discipline(s) of the degree being pursued.

Recommended Type of Activities

  • Fee-paying short-term programmes listed on Global Classroom or endorsed by GEO/academic units.
  • Programme-related study tours or field trips arranged by academic units.
  • International competition or conference (student participating as audience)* that is reputable/influential in the field and is beneficial to students in terms of personal, academic and professional development. Endorsement from academic unit is recommended.
  • Other offshore learning experiences that are credit bearing or formally assessed.
  • SAF does not support internship, service learning, Global Student Exchange Programmes, Summer@OxBridge or ICCPS subsidy recipients.

*You may apply International Competition & Conference Participation Scheme (ICCPS) if you will participate as presenter/contestant.



  • Full-time undergraduate students in UGC-funded programmes.
  • Final-year students are not eligible to submit application for activities happen in Summer Break.
  • Learning experiences last for at least 5 calendar days (travel time excluded).

Arrangement under Coronavirus Pandemic 

  • GEO does not support travelling for study abroad activities during Semester 2 and Summer Term of 2020-21, per University guideline. All programmes required travel abroad will not be supported by the University and no Funding will be provided by GEO. Exceptional destinations are Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. 
  • 2020-21 SAF does not cover any financial loss (e.g. programme application fee, travel or accommodation reservations) due to programme withdrawal by student, programme cancellation by the host or by the University. Student should consider the risk before any financial commitment.


Funding Amount

  • SAF is limited and may be distributed on first-come-first-served basis.
  • Only programme fee, registration fee, travel passage and accommodation may be funded.
  • Should the total cost of activity falls below the designated SAF amount listed, GEO reserve the right to make downward adjustment of the pre-approved financial support as necessary.

Programme details (e.g. Programme/activity objective; learning outcome; hosting institution(s)/organization(s); programme/activity duration and schedule; logistics arrangements (if applicable) including accommodation, visa and insurance; and programme cost breakdown.) and confirmed student participant list.
