Cooking Competition 1

PolyU FSN Cooking Competition Award Presentation Ceremony

To promote the importance of plant-based food in a healthy postpartum diet, we have co-organized a press conference cum award ceremony of cooking competition with Hong Kong Midwives Association. By analyzing the dietary data of postpartum women in 2024 and 2014, we found significant improvement in vegetables, dietary fibre and vitamin A intake, although the levels still fall short of dietary recommendations by the Department of Health. Near half of the participating mothers suffer from obesity and dyslipidemia, which is also a concern to be addressed. In the cooking competition, the panel of judges has selected plant-based recipes that are both nutritious, tasty and appealing, and can be easily prepared by postpartum women. We will continue to translate evidence-based findings from academic research to actionable changes in the community.

Dr Kenneth Lo introduces community nutrition project on RTHK Hong Kong United TV programme

Dr Kenneth Lo, Assistant Professor at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, has been interviewed by RTHK on the TV programme “Hong Kong United” ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifGuIKk6tgg ). During the interview, Dr Lo has introduced the community nutrition project organized by students from the Service-Learning programme in Nutrition and Healthy Diet. In this project, students have planned multiple interactive activities, including cooking workshop, drama, health assessment station and booth games, so that they can apply and practice the learned nutritional knowledge and skills in serving the community. That echoes the main goals of the Service-Learning programme, in which students can apply their skills and knowledge to deal with complex issues in social service, to develop a stronger empathy for people in need and a stronger sense of civic responsibility.
