Unlocking English: Winney Chan’s Fun Approach to English on RTHK!

Research & Scholarly Activities

Ms Winney Chan, instructor at the ELC, was recently featured on RTHK’s Putonghua radio programme 《普出校園精彩》 for four episodes, where she showcased her dynamic approach to teaching English and shared tips to enhance English skills through the use of AI.

In the first episode, Winney discussed interesting facts behind common English names such as Rachel and Jack, highlighting how ‘jack’ is used as a common noun and explaining its presence in idiomatic expressions like ‘jack of all trades, master of none.’

Building on that, the second episode explored five frequently used verbs, including ‘run’ and ‘fall,’ demonstrating how their meanings vary depending on the context.

The third episode shifted focus to five English idioms, such as ‘break the ice’ and ‘pull an all-nighter,’ along with their Chinese equivalents to aid bilingual understanding.

In the final episode, Winney introduced how AI tools can support autonomous English learning—for example, by using simple prompts to clarify grammar points like the difference between ‘in the hospital’ (hospitalised) and “at the hospital” (visiting), noting that the former can cause confusion in some contexts.
