Prof. Phoebe Lin Shares GenAI Writing Pedagogy at CUHK Workshop

Prof. Phoebe Lin, Assistant Professor of ENGL, delivered a workshop at CUHK on 14 May 2025 titled "Opportunities and Challenges in GenAI-Assisted Writing Instruction."
Prof. Lin showcased her innovative approach that positions GenAI tools like ChatGPT as collaborative writing partners rather than shortcuts. Her method encourages students to engage with AI in their first language before drafting academic English essays, promoting critical thinking and deeper idea development. Her research revealed that students using this approach experienced reduced writer's block and improved idea clarification. The workshop outlined ten key teaching principles, generating enthusiastic discussion among language teachers about responsible AI integration.
This exchange reaffirmed ENGL’s leadership in advancing innovative, student-driven approaches to academic writing in the AI era.
