“AI Technologies in Language Education” Seminar
Events
On 21 March 2025, the CLC was honoured to invite three outstanding young talents from Hong Kong’s information technology industry — Mr Tang Man Chun, Chairman of CHUNSGROUP; Mr Yu Yiu Kwan, Co-founder of CatoMind Limited; and Mr Wong Wing Tai, Head of Google’s Artificial Intelligence Department — to share their insights into the relationship between artificial intelligence and language learning. The seminar focused on AI platforms related to language learning, introducing how artificial intelligence can assist and support language learning, as well as the latest technologies and developments in the IT industry.
Mr Wong Wing Tai gave a special demonstration of the latest features of Google NotebookLM and introduced practical scenarios for teaching applications. Mr Tang Man Chun and Mr Yu Yiu Kwan explained the development of large language models from both theoretical and everyday perspectives to PolyU faculty and students, with a particular emphasis on the mechanisms of Chinese language processing in large language models. Using humorous examples, they highlighted the technical bottlenecks in dialects, classical Chinese, and the translation of individual words, reflecting the important role of linguistics and Chinese proficiency in prompt engineering.
The two-hour seminar was met with an enthusiastic response, sparking lively discussions and promoting in-depth exchanges between PolyU faculty and students and the information technology industry.
