PolyU research seizes BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2023

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) research has been honoured with the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK) Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2023 (STIP) for its exceptional accomplishments in the fields of “Advanced Manufacturing” and “FinTech”. Since the inception of this prestigious award last year, PolyU has reinforced its position as the leading institution in Hong Kong, securing a total of four awards. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, PolyU President, congratulated the three laureates and said, “PolyU takes pride in being home to such a distinguished group of scholars. These exceptionally talented researchers are driven by their passion for scientific breakthroughs and innovation. They strive to develop cutting-edge technologies and make ground-breaking discoveries that contribute to the betterment of the community, and which will have a lasting impact on the world. PolyU remains committed to supporting its researchers in their pursuit of research that not only benefits Hong Kong, but also the country and the world.” The three award-winning PolyU scholars: Prof. CHEUNG Chi Fai Benny, Chair Professor of Ultra-precision Machining and Metrology of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), is recognised in the “Advanced Manufacturing” field. His pioneering ultra-precision nano multi-ring machining technology has successfully been applied in the research and development of a novel and high-efficacy nano multi-ring defocus incorporated spectacle lens for myopia control, which has the potential to benefit myopic schoolchildren globally. A novel magnetic field-assisted batch superfinishing technology and equipment have also been developed for mass superfinishing surgical tools that can reduce wound trauma during bio-medical applications. His innovative research on the next generation of in-situ precision three-dimensional surface metrology not only supports manufacturing of high-precision products but also can be used under various manufacturing or measurement scenarios in the context of Industry 4.0 to realise smart precision manufacturing. Prof. Cheung has made outstanding contributions with his innovative research into new methods, new processes and new equipment for ultra-precision machining, precision metrology and smart precision manufacturing. Prof. AU Man Ho Allen, Professor of the Department of Computing is recognised in the “FinTech” field. His ground-breaking research focuses on the design and analysis of privacy-enhancing and quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms to address security, privacy and scalability needs in real-world blockchains. His research advances blockchain technology and spearheads the Web3 revolution through innovative approaches and transformative solutions, paving the way for secure, interoperable and scalable applications in the next generation of decentralised protocols and applications. Many of his inventions have been recognised and adopted by leading IT companies and blockchain platforms. Prof. Au’s recent research on zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is noteworthy. ZKP is widely regarded as a breakthrough technology that enables data privacy protection, efficiency improvement and scalability of transparent systems such as blockchains. He developed innovative solutions that reduce the computation cost of ZKP. His team optimised ZKP using distributed computing and GPU acceleration, winning US$550,000 at ZPRIZE organised by the Web3 community. Prof. LUO Xiapu Daniel, Professor of the Department of Computing, is also recognised in the “FinTech” field. His innovative work in the field of cybersecurity has been instrumental in identifying and fixing security vulnerabilities and defending against cyber-attacks that pose significant risks to critical infrastructures, including blockchain systems, smart contracts, smartphones, IoT devices and automobiles. His research findings have been recognised by prominent blockchain platforms and leading IT companies. Prof. Luo’s research contributes to strengthening the robustness of blockchain technologies, advancing the security and privacy of mobile and IoT devices and enhancing network security measures. His work has led to ten best/distinguished paper awards, including the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at ISSTA 2022, ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Award at ICSE 2021 and Best Paper Award at INFOCOM 2018, as well as several awards from industry. The STIP, established by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and sponsored by BOCHK, is a non-governmental merit-based award. It aims at facilitating the development of science and technology innovation in Hong Kong by rewarding outstanding individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to science and technology innovation in Hong Kong. A cash prize of HK$2 million is awarded for each field. PolyU achieved remarkable success in last year’s STIP 2022 in the areas of “Advanced Manufacturing” and “Life and Health”, with the prestigious awards being bestowed upon Prof. WANG Zuankai, Associate Vice President (Research and Innovation) and Chair Professor of Nature-Inspired Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Prof. ZHENG Yongping, Henry G. PolyU hosts Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub Project Achievement Sharing Day Summarising the fruitful results of six years to promote the application of local gerontechnology

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) hosted the Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub Project Achievement Sharing Day on 3 November 2023, aiming to share the fruitful achievements of the Project with stakeholders in the gerontechnology (gerontech) field. The event brought together cross-disciplinary experts to share their experience and best practices and to discuss the future development of Hong Kong’s gerontech ecosystem. The welcome ceremony was officiated by Mr Chris SUN, Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Bryan WONG, Head of Charities (Positive Ageing & Elderly Care) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Dr Miranda LOU, PolyU Executive Vice President. The event was attended by more than 300 cross-disciplinary representatives from the gerontech field including stakeholders from the elderly care industry, academia, and the business sector. An HKSAR Chief Executive’s Community Project since December 2017, the Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub received a donation of over HK$47 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is currently managed by the PolyU Department of Biomedical Engineering. The Project aims to tackle issues related to Hong Kong’s ageing population through the establishment of a cross-disciplinary network, in order to promote not only innovative gerontech solutions for elderly care, but also to enhance quality of life for the elderly. In her welcome remarks, Dr Lou stated, “PolyU is not an academic silo, but rather an integral part of the Hong Kong community. Whether it is scientific research or knowledge transfer, we must ensure that we contribute to the well-being of Hong Kong citizens. As an international city with an ageing population, we believe that utilising PolyU’s knowledge and technology to address the societal needs of the elderly is the most appropriate strategy for us. The Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub aims to advance gerontech in order to foster a smart and age-friendly community. A Day Experience Centre is located on the PolyU campus to provide information on gerontech for elderly people and caregivers, and six elderly care service and rehabilitation service units have been invited to join as strategic partners in the development of Real-life Hostels. These Hostels are equipped with gerontech to enhance the quality of life for service users, who include the elderly and aged individuals with disabilities. This initiative aims to promote the application of technology in the industry, ultimately optimising the continuum of care.” In his welcome remarks, Mr Wong stated that The Hong Kong Jockey Club is committed to supporting older people to age with dignity and respect, and working with different partners to improve the elderly’s quality of life. “The Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub Project has made remarkable achievements. We are very grateful for the efforts of the PolyU team and all the organisations and volunteers involved in the project. As gerontech becomes popular, the next step is to enhance the application of these tools. In the next three years, the Club will continue to cooperate with PolyU to improve the services of residential care homes for the elderly through technology,” Mr Wong said. Enhancing quality of service for the elderly and disabled individuals with gerontech solutions To improve the continuum of care services for the elderly and individuals with disabilities, the Project aims to reinforce the application of gerontech tools based on the specific needs of each elderly person and disabled service units, and to facilitate on-site visits at the Real-life Hostels by elderly care industry representatives with a view to encouraging the industry to effectively leverage technology to improve service quality. Furthermore, innovative PolyU technology solutions have been implemented in multiple Real-life Hostels. These solutions include the eNightLog bed-leaving monitoring system for enhancing overnight residential services, the smart toilet sensing system to ensure the safety of the elderly during toileting, and a detachable laser indicator to assist older adults in gait training activities. These gerontech solutions have not only benefited 3,500 elderly and disabled individuals, but also alleviated the burden and pressure on frontline healthcare workers. At the same time, through the practical experience of applying gerontech in six Real-life Hostels, the industry has gained valuable reference and insights on the application of gerontech solutions. Promoting gerontech applications in the community The Project team has established a Day Experience Centre on the PolyU campus, showcasing over 2,000 gerontech tools collected from around the world and integrated them into a categorised resource library. They have also organised over 1,200 activities for public education on gerontech, including guided tours, workshops and exhibitions. To further enhance public awareness of gerontech in Hong Kong, the Project team regularly organises the “Health Care Day” to provide health assessments, encouraging the public to utilise technology for their own personal health management. They have also collaborated with 12 District Health Centres (DHC) and DHC Expresses to establish “Gerontech Corners” and co-organised 35 thematic exhibitions with over 500 gerontech and assistive devices on show. In addition, community outreach activities have been conducted in partnership with various organisations promoting the use of technology in preventing chronic diseases. The Project has invited around 60 elderly care units to participate in trial programme of the PolyU research achievement the Smart Companion Robot. In total, these various activities have benefited over 40,000 individuals in Hong Kong, contributing to the widespread application of gerontech. The Project team has made remarkable contributions to the promotion and development of gerontech, earning widespread societal recognition and garnering support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. In the next three years, the Project team will continue to provide gerontech support to the community and work hand in hand with 11 self-financing residential care homes for the elderly operated by small-to-medium NGOs. This collaboration aims to create more intelligent residential care homes, furthering the advancement of the elderly care industry and the community in embracing gerontech in response to the challenges presented by an ageing population.   ***END***

PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute officially inaugurated Joining force with Mainland enterprises to cultivate industry-academia-research collaborations and propel I&T development in the Yangtze River Delta

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Wuxi Municipal People’s Government of Jiangsu Province have jointly established the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute (The Institute), and an Inauguration Ceremony cum Industry-University-Research Collaboration Agreement Signing Ceremony was held on 2 November. Located in Wuxi, the Institute serves as a platform to drive advanced research and innovation, as well as nurture innovation and technology (I&T) talents. It has entered into agreements with ten high-tech enterprises in Mainland China to foster industry-university-research collaborations, driving the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T development. A delegation led by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost; and Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) visited Wuxi and met with Mr DU Xiaogang, Communist Party Secretary of Wuxi; Mr ZHOU Changqing, Member of the Wuxi Party Committee Standing Committee and Head of the United Front Work Department; Mr QIN Yongxin and Mr ZHOU Wendong, Vice Mayors of Wuxi; and Mr CUI Rongguo, Party Chief of Wuxi National Hi-tech District and Party Secretary of Xinwu District. They had an in-depth exchange on reinforcing cooperation between Jiangsu and Hong Kong, along with leaders of various levels from the Wuxi Municipal Government and representatives from domestic companies. PolyU is the first Hong Kong tertiary institution to establish a research institute in Wuxi and participate in the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T drive. The Institute will focus on three key areas: building an internationally high-end research and innovation platform in the fields of aviation and aeronautical engineering, advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, new materials and telecommunications networks; establishing an incubation base to translate research outcomes into real-world solutions; and cultivating outstanding engineers and technopreneurs with a global perspective through PolyU’s leading engineering doctorate and postdoctoral fellowship programmes. The Institute will leverage PolyU’s global networks and impact to attract technology companies to the Wuxi High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, organise industry and academic exchange activities, and expand channels for international exchange and collaborations. To facilitate the translation of research achievements, the Institute signed agreements with ten domestic high-tech enterprises in Wuxi, namely Wuxi Hyatech Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Asia-pacific Aviation Technology Co., Ltd; Xiangsheng Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Sanlian Bioengineering Co., Ltd; Wuxi International Life Science Innovation Campus; Wuxi Autowell Technology Co., Ltd; Hymson Laser Technology Group Co., Ltd; Tonghe Carbon Materials Technology (Wuxi) Co., Ltd; Loulan Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd; and GRG Metrology & Test (Wuxi) Co., Ltd. The Institute will serve as a platform to facilitate knowledge transfer and support enterprises in achieving technological advancement by leveraging PolyU’s expertise in innovation and research. Dr Lam Tai-fai, remarked, “By capitalising on its expertise in talent development, academic and research innovations, and global network, PolyU will collaborate with Wuxi’s industries to enhance R&D services, expedite the translation of research outcomes into practical applications, and promote industrial upgrading. By pooling our efforts, we can unlock the powerful synergy between government, industry and academia enabling us to open a new chapter for the I&T development of Jiangsu, Hong Kong and the Nation.” During the visit, the PolyU delegates also introduced to the Wuxi Municipal Government and enterprise representatives the University’s engineering doctorate programmes, research achievements in biomedical engineering through industry-academic-research collaborations, as well as the Institute’s future development and talent development plans. Young PolyU scientist lauded in MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific 2023

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Assistant Professor Dr Kathy K. LENG from the Department of Applied Physics, has been named by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Review as one of the “Innovators Under 35” (TR35) in the Asia Pacific region in 2023. This prestigious recognition highlights Dr Leng’s outstanding achievements and advancements in science and technology innovation. Dr Leng is actively engaged in research focused on discovering new physics in the emerging field of molecularly thin 2D hybrid perovskites. She has developed a set of nanotechnology tools and methods for investigating these materials at the molecular level and harnessing their potential for multifunctional smart device applications. Currently, her team is focusing on the large-scale growth of molecularly thin 2D hybrid perovskite films and exploring their novel spintronic device applications. She is the first scholar to observe the atomic structure of molecularly thin hybrid perovskites and correlate it to their optoelectronic properties. She discovered that very thin perovskites undergo structural relaxation, resulting in changes to their optical properties, which can be reversibly controlled by light or strain. This breakthrough has enabled her to fabricate the first monolayer perovskite photodetector that converts light to electricity with very high efficiency. The capability to tune the optoelectronic properties of these materials through external stimuli enables applications in intelligent and multifunctional devices. This research outcome will play a significant role in advancing the field of flexible optoelectronics and fundamental physics in the future. Dr Leng said, “Throughout my research journey, I have been inspired and encouraged by my peers and senior colleagues. Some of them have served as my mentor and role model, while others have collaborated with me and provided advice. Being part of this supportive and collaborative research network gives me much inspiration and encouragement. Recognition through impactful publications, grants, and conference presentations also spurs me on to work harder.” Based on her niche area of molecularly thin 2D hybrid perovskites, Dr Leng has recently received several awards in recognition for her outstanding achievements, including the Excellent Young Scientist Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) from the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2023. She was also the recipient of a Young Innovative Researcher Award 2023 from PolyU. Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, said, “PolyU has consistently dedicated itself to nurturing exceptional young scientists, providing ample resources to cultivate a vibrant environment for innovation and technology, and advocating for groundbreaking research. We take great pride in honouring PolyU’s talented scholars as they shine globally through their remarkable scientific research capabilities and impactful contributions.” MIT Technology Review identifies the TR35 annually from diverse technical fields, including biotechnology and medicine, energy and material, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and telecommunications, and intelligent manufacturing. PolyU develops first-of-its-kind multimodal robot empowering post-stroke ankle-foot telerehabilitation

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has achieved another breakthrough in rehabilitation device development. The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is the first-of-its-kind multimodal robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation specifically designed for stroke patients with hemiplegia, which helps improve the motor function of their lower limb and walking ability. Powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the device enables telerehabilitation for remote management of patients’ rehabilitation progress and allows them to undertake self-help rehabilitation exercises at home. Therapists can remotely monitor the rehabilitation progress of multiple patients. In recent years, Hong Kong has seen around 50,000 new cases of stroke annually, with 85% of patients experiencing varying degrees of impaired physical mobility. Regular, repeated and intensive rehabilitation training is critical for restoring the physical mobility of stroke patients, thereby alleviating post-stroke symptoms such as disability. However, due to overwhelming demand, access to daytime outpatient rehabilitation services in local hospitals and rehabilitation clinics is challenging. Consequently, stroke patients are often unable to undergo timely and routine rehabilitation exercises. Common functional impairments among stroke patients include foot drop and inversion, which significantly disrupt their daily lives. Developed by a research team led by Dr Hu Xiaoling, Associate Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of PolyU, the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is an innovative multimodal wearable robot for ankle-foot rehabilitation that integrates the advantages of exoskeleton, soft pneumatic muscles, tactile sensory feedback and neuromuscular electrical stimulation technology in one system. The device can not only correct foot drop and foot inversion effectively, but also improve the gait of stroke patients. Additionally, it can help improve balance while walking and contribute to rehabilitative neuroplasticity in the long term. Stroke patients with hemiplegia generally have weakened muscle strength and discoordination at their affected lower limb, especially in the foot and ankle. The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton can automatically detect patients’ gait events including the standing state, heel strike, heel off and toe off. The multimodal assistance from the device can help a patient stand firm on their affected foot with mechanical support from the exoskeleton and soft pneumatic muscles, learn to balance the plantar pressure and exert propelling force when walking with the vibration tactile feedback and neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and improve foot drop with the neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton features a lightweight design weighing about 400g which, together with its sportswear features, makes it more suitable for the hemiplegic patients to wear it unilaterally on their own. This device also has the advantage of low power consumption and can be used continuously for four hours with a 9V rechargeable battery, enabling patients to practice anytime, anywhere – at home, outdoors, or indoors. Other exoskeleton lower-limb robots available on the market, which rely solely on external force to assist patients in walking, they are of very limited value in improving ankle joint and muscle coordination for stroke patients with hemiplegia. These robots are also limited to use in hospitals and rehabilitation clinics due to their high weight and power consumption. As for conventional ankle-foot orthoses, these are prone to causing muscle atrophy and interference to patients regaining voluntary motor control over the ankle of the affected leg. Dr Hu stated, “Combining the research capabilities of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Centre, School of Fashion and Textiles and Department of Computing, the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton is a testament to PolyU’s exceptional strength in interdisciplinary research. This research achievement provides stroke patients a better option for lower limb rehabilitation training, incorporating the training into their daily activities. It also enables therapists to provide tele-supervision of the rehabilitation progress of multiple patients. We hope such flexible self-help training can effectively supplement traditional outpatient rehabilitation services, helping stroke patients achieve more efficient rehabilitation progress.” Dr Hu’s research team is collaborating with several local and Mainland hospitals and rehabilitation clinics to conduct clinical studies on the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton. Research studies have confirmed that rehabilitation training for stroke patients using the device is 40% more effective for stroke rehabilitation than applying external mechanical forces alone. Among the 12 patients participating in the clinical studies who completed a 1.5-month training programme consisting of 20 one-and-a-half-hour sessions, ankle dorsiflexion improved from an initial five degrees to 10 degrees without equipment assistance, approaching the normal level of 15 degrees. In addition, more than 90% of the patients successfully corrected their foot inversion. The research team also utilised IoT technology to record patients’ rehabilitation progress via a mobile app. This approach, incorporating functions such as real-time monitoring and progressive evaluation, as well as personalised guidance and reminders, enables patients to effectively engage in rehabilitation training even without the physical presence of a therapist, thereby improving patient engagement and treatment outcomes. The rehabilitation progresses of multiple patients can be matched to each other via the app for fostering mutual support and companionship throughout their training journey. It also enables therapists to provide remote monitoring and supervision on the progress of multiple patients, ensuring that rehabilitation proceeds smoothly. Dr Hu’s research team plans to commercialise the Mobile Ankle-foot Exoneuromusculoskeleton next year. In 2021, she co-founded the startup Thecon Technology (HK) Limited, which has been supported by the Incu-Bio Programme of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks. Last year, the startup successfully launched a mobile exoneuromusculoskeleton for upper limb rehabilitation, the “Mobilexo Arm”, onto the market. This product has been adopted by a number of local and Mainland hospitals and rehabilitation clinics.   ***END***

Healthy Ageing Conference 2023 Advancing Healthy Ageing in the Western Pacific Moving Forward with the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing

Population ageing is a pressing priority in the Western Pacific region, home to one of the world's largest and fastest-growing elderly populations. Recognizing the significance of this issue, the World Health Organization (WHO) has taken the lead in developing an action plan on healthy ageing for the region, aligned with the United Nations (UN) Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030). In line with these efforts, the Healthy Ageing Conference 2023 was successfully held in Hong Kong on 26-27 October 2023. The conference, organized by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services, School of Nursing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and co-organized by the Department of Health of The Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), PolyU Research Institute of Smart Ageing, and PolyU Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, served as a crucial platform to address the challenges and explore innovative solutions for healthy ageing in the region. The conference's opening ceremony marked its official commencement, with esteemed speakers delivering their addresses. Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, welcomed participants and emphasized the pivotal role of the conference in realizing the United Nations' vision of healthy ageing. “The conference aimed to address the multifaceted factors influencing the well-being of older individuals and their families. It provided a platform to showcase cutting-edge gerontechnological innovations, discuss the latest interventions and advancements in epidemiology, and identify comprehensive strategies for implementing the WHO's action items.” Prof. TENG remarked. Mr ZHANG Hui, Counsellor (DG level) from the Department of Ageing and Health, National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, emphasized healthy ageing was the least costly and most effective means and ways to cope with population ageing. The Chinese government had been positively responding to the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030). Mr. ZHANG highlighted the significance of collaboration and knowledge exchange between Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao in various aspects such as scientific research, technologies, projects, standards, norms, talents, services, and industries related to healthy ageing and elderly care. Mr ZHANG Hui expressed, "The National Health Commission will continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao in the field of healthy aging, learn from each other and complement each other's advantages." Prof. Chung-mau LO, Secretary of Health, Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, emphasized that the government acknowledges the significant challenges posed by the rapidly ageing population. The government is committed to implementing a comprehensive structural reform that will transition the healthcare system from a treatment-oriented approach to a prevention-focused approach, and shift the service delivery from hospital-based to community-based settings. Prof. LO stated, "Our ultimate goal is to enhance the overall health of the population, ensure accessible and integrated healthcare services, and establish a sustainable healthcare system." Dr Ronald LAM, Director of Health from the Department of Health of the HKSAR Government, reiterated the unwavering commitment of the HKSAR Government to promote healthy ageing. Dr LAM emphasized that a comprehensive policy on healthy ageing has been formulated based on the recommendations of the Elderly Commission. Various programmes aimed at promoting the well-being of older adults are being implemented by the Department of Health, including health education for all age groups, caregiver training, and supports the revitalization of primary healthcare services. “Meeting the challenges of Silver Tsunami would require not only cross-sectoral, but also international collaboration. Let’s join hands for the health and well-being of our senior citizens.” said Dr LAM. Dr Hiromasa OKAYASU, Director of the Division of Healthy Environments and Populations at the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO), reaffirmed that the conference offered an exceptional platform for policymakers, stakeholders, practitioners, researchers, and academics to come together and address the pressing trends and challenges related to population ageing in the region. PolyU and Hefei Luyang People’s Government to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hefei Luyang People’s Government have reached an agreement to jointly establish the PolyU-Hefei Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Research Institute), with the aim of fostering in-depth and effective collaboration in industry, academia and research and cultivating talents. The establishment of the Research Institute contributes to enhancing and facilitating research development, academic exchange, nurturing of talent and knowledge transfer in various fields, including biomedical and sensing precision technology, and aerospace information. By leveraging the research and academic excellence of PolyU, these collaborations support the development of a top-notch innovation platform in Hefei. Hefei is one of the national core areas for comprehensive technological innovation development. It has the first batch of national laboratories and is one of the cities with the most large-scale scientific facilities in the Mainland. The cooperation will also focus on creating a sustainable incubator for start-ups, driving innovation in emerging industries, developing key core technologies, and promoting their application based on the needs of Hefei’s economic development. The agreement was signed in Heifei city on 25 October in Hefei city by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr SHI Kun, Executive Vice-Head of the Luyang District Government. The signing was witnessed by Prof. DONG Cheng, Associate Vice President (Mainland Research Advancement) of PolyU; Prof. CHEN Wu, Head of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics of PolyU; Prof. NI Yiqing, Director of National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Centre (Hong Kong Branch) of PolyU; Mr GAO Qiang, Secretary of the Communist Party of China Luyang District Committee; Mr ZHU Huajun, Director of the Luyang District Party Committee Office; and Mr SHEN Bin, Director of the Administrative Committee of Luyang Economic and Development Zone. PolyU welcomes 2023 Policy Address initiatives on education, innovation and technology development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) welcomes the Chief Executive’s initiatives in the 2023 Policy Address, which outlined a holistic approach for nurturing and attracting talents, fostering innovation and technology (I&T), and investing more resources in the transformation and commercialisation of R&D outcomes. The measures, including the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme; increased funding for universities’ technology transfer offices; the New Industrialisation Acceleration Scheme for life and health technologies, AI and data science, advanced manufacturing, and new energy technologies; and the development of an International Hub for Post-secondary Education and the Northern Metropolis, will contribute to high-quality economic development in Hong Kong and enhance its I&T sector and overall competitiveness. The University also welcomes the Government’s plan to double the admission quota of non-local students to Government-funded post-secondary institutions and increase the quota of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU, welcomed and supported the Chief Executive Mr John Lee’s second Policy Address. The University has achieved remarkable success in driving innovation and entrepreneurship. To date, PolyU has trained 7,600 entrepreneurs and nurtured more than 480 startups, including over 60 academic-led startups, four unicorns and 14 ponies. In addition, over the past year, PolyU has signed memorandums of understanding with seven cities in the Mainland and one Mainland university to establish joint technology and innovation research institutes. These institutes aim to translate research outcomes into solutions to address the industrial and societal needs of cities in the Mainland, thereby promoting their development. The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR), which comprises 17 research institutes and research centres, fosters interdisciplinary research, with a focus on advanced technologies and manufacturing, good health and well-being, as well as smart and sustainable cities. PAIR also establishes partnerships with world-renowned scholars to foster knowledge transfer. PolyU is committed to nurturing a new generation of young people who love the Nation and Hong Kong, who are aspirational, have a global perspective and adopt positive values, while enhancing the sense of national identity and appreciation for the richness and beauty of traditional Chinese culture among students. Earlier this year, PolyU established the Research Centre for Chinese History and Culture to promote Chinese culture, strengthen patriotic education and enhance youngsters’ national identity and sense of belonging to the Nation. The University also places emphasis on non-local Service-Learning initiatives and aims to offer all undergraduates with at least one learning experience in the Mainland or overseas in order to broaden their horizons. Actively exploring innovations in education, the University has furthermore established the Institute for Higher Education Research and Development (IHERD) to promote education reform in response to the demand for talents in the age of AI. PolyU’s Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology (PReCIT) submitted recommendations for the Policy Address during the public consultation period. These recommendations covered various areas, including the establishment of a supercomputing centre, a university town in the Northern Metropolis, an international education hub, and a central research platform for the validation of Chinese Medicine’s efficacy and safety. Joint Statement: Prioritising Mental Health and Building Connections Among University Students in Hong Kong

We are saddened by the recent spate of tragic incidents involving the passing of our students and young people. As the representatives responsible for student affairs at eight local universities, we are determined to give the highest priority to the mental well-being of our students. We care deeply for their wellness and recognize the unique challenges they face, and will spare no effort in creating a supportive environment that encourages compassion, connection, and mutual care. To University Students: We urge every student to put their mental health as top priority; self-harm is never a solution. Students are strongly encouraged to: i) reach out, talk to someone you trust, and approach us for available support services both within the university and in the wider community; ii) extend support to their peers within and beyond the university community. It is important that every student feels valued, heard, and supported throughout their academic journey and we endeavour to do that together. To Young People in the Community: Self-care is of utmost importance. Please take care of your well-being by maintaining a healthy study-life balance, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as exercise, listening to music or helping others. Seeking support is a sign of strength and self-awareness, and never a weakness. To Parents: Students may lack experience in handling crises while under stress. Parents are their children's greatest assets when it comes to providing guidance and support. By offering more encouragement and being present for their children, parents can help guide them in navigating crises with greater resilience and managing challenging situations. Parents’ guidance and companionship are invaluable in helping young people develop the life skills necessary to overcome adversity. 208 PolyU scholars ranked among world’s top 2% most-cited scientists

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) now has 208 scholars ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in the newly released metrics compiled by Stanford University, surpassing last year’s record of 201 scholars, based on career-long impact. PolyU stands out globally with the largest representation of top scholars in the fields of Building and Construction (19 scholars) and Civil Engineering (13). It also demonstrates the strongest research performance in Hong Kong with the largest representation of top scholars in six specific fields. In addition to Building and Construction and Civil Engineering, it leads locally with the most top scholars in Energy (14), Operations Research (9), Optoelectronics and Photonics (9) and Nursing (7). Remarkably, four PolyU academics are placed within the top 10 scholars worldwide in their respective fields, while six scholars are ranked among the top 20. This is the highest number among universities in Hong Kong. The scholars were named in the latest release of the Stanford University-led compilation of citation indicators covering over 100,000 top scientists. They were grouped into 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields using indicators including information on citations, individual’s scientific research output, co-authorship and a composite indicator for career-long citation impact up to the end of 2022. The inclusion of a large number of PolyU academics in the list is a testament to the University’s aspiration to become an innovative world-class university and its commitment to translate research excellence into positive societal impact on various fronts.   ***END***
