The paper “Principles, Functions, and Applications of Optical Meta‐Lens” published by Dr Mu Ku Chen as the first author, Prof. Din-Ping Tsai and Dr Yongfeng Wu of EIE as the co-authors, is featured as the cover article on the latest Advanced Optical Materials journal (Volume 9, Issue 4). 

Advanced Optical Materials is an international, interdisciplinary forum for peer-reviewed papers on materials science which focuses on all aspects of light-matter interactions. It has a 2019 Impact Factor of 8.286 (Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics, 2020)). The scope of this scientific journal is dedicated to breakthrough discoveries and fundamental research in photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials.

A meta‐lens is an advanced flat optical device composed of artificial antennas. The amplitude, phase, and polarization of incident light can be engineered to satisfy the application requirements of meta‐lenses. Meta‐lenses can be designed to achieve a variety of functions, such as diffraction‐limited focusing, high focusing efficiency, and aberration correlation, which are useful in various application scenarios. This paper focuses on the recent progress in meta‐lenses, from fundamentals to applications. The present challenges in this domain are summarized and future prospects are offered. The primary aim of this review is to provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of meta‐lenses and potential inspiration for designing high‐performance meta‐lenses for feasible applications.
