Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

The AIR group conducts cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence, robotics, material intelligence, and signal processing. The missions of the team are:
   •   to carry out original research on artificial intelligence and signal processing and their applications;
   •   to act as a strong research base to foster international collaborations;
   •   to transfer academic research results into practical uses to benefit the industrial, commercial, and service sectors.

The group applies AI, robotics, and signal processing to

   •   Computer vision, 3D scene analysis, and 3D object recognition (Prof. Kenneth Lam, Prof. L.P. Chau, Prof. Luca Rossi, and Dr. Yi Wang)
   •   Spoken language processing, voice biometrics, voice privacy, and speech for healthcare (Prof. K.A. Lee and Prof. M.W. Mak, Dr. W.W. Lin)
   •   Bioinformatics and biomedical engineering (Prof. Bonnie Law and Prof. M.W. Mak)
•   Image and video processing (Prof. Y.L. Chan)
•   Material intelligence (Prof. H.T. Zhao and Dr. Z.D. He)

Professor M.W. Mak

Speaker Recognition: Professor Mak’s recent paper in domain-invariant speaker verification is the first attempt in speaker recognition that minimizes the discrepancy among multiple domains in the embedding layer of autoencoders.

Professor Kenneth Lam

Professor Lam has published more than 110 journal publications and 150 conference publications. More than half of his publications are on face-image analysis and recognition. He has published many good technical papers, with good citations.

Professor Y.L. Chan

The current research focus of Dr Chan is Content-Aware Video Coding. Dr Chan and his group has witnessed the rapid developments of various video coding technologies in the past decade.

Professor Bonnie Law

Dr Law’s main research focus includes signal processing, DNA sequence analysis and source camera identification. Digital data has been abundant. Its source will be important in forensics analysis which can help in copyright identification

Prof H.T. Zhao

Material Intelligence: Professor Haitao Zhao has been working on Material Intelligence, which is a type of interdisciplinary technology concerned with making material synthesis work in an intelligent way by artificial intelligence and robotics, similar to the way that the scientists mind and hands works and even beyond.
