This year The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is celebrating its 80th anniversary and I am delighted to add my congratulations to the countless good wishes from the community.

From its humble beginnings in 1937, in Wanchai as the Government Trade School it has grown in stature to a full university in November 1994. Transcending through being a technical college to a Polytechnic to its present situation, the institution has been a leading light in post-secondary education.

In 1947 with the move to new premises in Hung Hom, a new chapter was heralded in Hong Kong’s industrial education. The Polytechnic, as it was then, provided excellent practical teaching and produced many technical professionals who during the ensuing years were instrumental in the growth of Hong Kong manufacturing success. Since that time the institution has been at the side of industry in Hong Kong and developed with it by providing bright new minds to carry out innovation and creative ideas.

With the added strength of being a university, PolyU is dedicated to be a leading education body that excels in professional education, applied research and partnership for the betterment of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world. We, in the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, fully support this vision and will work together with PolyU wherever there is the opportunity.

PolyU sees its mission very clearly to nurture graduates who are critical thinkers, effective communicators, innovative problem solvers, lifelong learners and ethical leaders. I believe the university has the professionalism, wisdom and ability to achieve their goal to advance knowledge and the frontiers of technology to meet the changing needs of society.

May I congratulate and send my good wishes to all at PolyU for continued success.
