Competitions of Junior-Earth-Savers on Water & Air Purification

On 9 November 2019, CEE hosted a successful competition, namely Junior Earth Savers on Water & Air Purification, for secondary school students. There were 23 participants in the event.   Dr Ben Leu, Associate Professor of CEE, started the programme by giving an introduction to water issues in both Hong Kong and the world, and the possible solutions.   The first part of the competition was about clean water with emphasis on nano-technology, advanced oxidation, and adsorption, whereas the second part of it was about air cleaning and odor control.   The programme was enriched by a talk on air problem and an introduction to CEE academic programmes given by Prof. S.C. Lee, Professor and Associate Head (Partnership).   Participants were given opportunities to visit Water and Waste Laboratory Odour Research Laboratory, and Advanced Environmental Microbiology Laboratories.

Future Engineers Competitions - Structural and Fire Safety

On 9 November 2019, 18 secondary students from 10 local school participated in the “Future Engineers Competitions – Structural and Fire Safety” hosted by CEE.   Prof. CS Poon, Head of CEE, gave a warm welcome to the participants on behalf of the Department.   Dr SY Zhu, Associate Professor of CEE, started the programme by giving a mini-lecture on “Driving sustainable growth of our city – the role of structural and civil engineers”.     Followed by the talk, a challenging team-based bridge construction competition was led by Ir CL Kwan, Teaching Fellow of CEE.   Participants were invited to visit the Structural Dynamics Laboratory and Hydraulics Laboratory of CEE, and the Fire Laboratory of the Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE).   Apart from the laboratory visits, a talk on “Fire Safety Engineering” was given by Dr XY Huang, Assistant Professor of BSE.

Sections for October CEE School Outreach Programme 2019/2020

10 October 2019 - Yew Chung International School   CEE kick-started its School Outreach Programme 2019/2020 at Yew Chung International School on 10 October 2019.   Dr Ben Leu, Programme Leader of BEng(Hons) in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development, gave a mini lecture on “The recent development of environmental protection in Hong Kong” and an introduction of CEE academic programmes to the students there.   18 October 2019 - Ho Yu College and Primary School On 18 October 2019, Dr TM Chan, Associate Professor of CEE, gave a mini lecture on “Structural Engineering” and an introduction of CEE academic programmes to Ho Yu College and Primary School.   The talk received positive comments from a total of 38 Secondary 6 students.   22 October 2019 - Yan Chai Hospotal No.2 Secondary School On 22 October 2019, Dr SK Lai, Assistant Professor of CEE, gave a mini lecture on “Structural and Fire Engineering” and introduced CEE academic programmes at Yan Chai Hospital No.2 Secondary School.   25 October 2019 - Pui Kiu Middle School   On 25 October 2019, Dr Tony Sze, Assistant Professor of CEE, gave a mini lecture on “Structural Engineering” and introduced CEE academic programmes at Pui Kiu Middle School.   A total of 130 Secondary students attended the mini lecture.

Prof. William HK Lam as guest speaker for UT-ITE seminar series, University of Toronto

Prof. William H.K. Lam (Chair Professor of Civil & Transportation Engineering) gave a special guest presentation for the UT-ITE seminar series in the University of Toronto. His talk, “A household-based optimum utility approach for modeling joint activity-travel choices in congested road networks” drew much interest from graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and others.

各位同學、校友與同事: 本系在推廣學位課程的海報採用了火災圖片,引起廣泛關注,現就此事件作出以下回應。 海報上圖片原意是揭示結構及防火工程學對嚴重火災有防患於未然的作用,但得悉外界對此感到不安,本系已立即停用有關圖片,並在社交媒體公開致歉。同時,我們亦已於今天下午與本系學生會代表會面,解釋情況。 本系日後會加強宣傳刊物的審批程序,避免同類事件發生。謹此再次鄭重向所有受影響的同學及人士致歉。 香港理工大學 土木及環境工程學系 2019年10月16日     Dear Students, Alumni and Colleagues, With the intent of illustrating the importance of structural and fire engineering in preventing serious fires, our Department used a photo of a burning building on a poster for promoting our degree programmes.  The poster has drawn extensive attention and commentary. In view of this, we have addressed the public’s concern and have stopped using the relevant photo immediately.  We have already posted our statement with a sincere apology on social media.  We have also met with the representatives of our Departmental Student Society this afternoon to explain the situation. The Department will take a stringent approach to reviewing our promotional materials in future.  We are deeply sorry and hope fellow students and the public will accept our apology for the disturbance caused. Engineers Without Borders Global Citizenship Programme 2019

With a vision to build up the capacity of communities in respond to the global challenges and contribute to sustainable development through innovative engineering, Ms Cheng Chun Wing, student of BEng in Civil Engineering, participated in a 8-day service trip to Myanmar organised by Engineers Without Borders (Hong Kong) in June 2019. The programme provided a platform for future engineering leaders to explore the global challenges, to serve the society proactively with global vision, and hence to contribute to the sustainable development goals as global citizens.

Congratulations on receiving the 'Yasoshima Yoshi-no-suke Prize' at EASTS 2019

A paper titled “Modeling Joint Activity-Travel Patterns in Pedestrian Networks with Possibility of Using Wi-Fi Data” authored by Mr Khoa Dang Vo (PhD Student, CEE), Miss Kun Qian (Former PhD Student, CEE), Prof. William H.K. Lam (Chair Professor of Civil and Transportation Engineering, CEE) and Prof. Agachai Sumalee (Professor, CEE) was awarded the ‘Yasoshima Yoshi-no-suke Prize’ (Best of the Best Paper Award) in the 13th International Conference of The Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS) on 9-12 September 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The prize is to commend the academic and/or practical contribution for realizing better mobility in East Asia Region and the world.

The First Research Salon (Structural Unit) Successfully Launched

CEE launched the 1st Research Salon (Structural Unit) on 6 September 2019. It aims to encourage research exchange among research students and research staff, foster linkage between different research areas that will broaden the intellectual horizons and networks of research students and research staffs, and enhance the presentation skills. The Salon is organized every Friday in Semester 1 of 2019/20. Dr Junqi Huang was invited to give a sharing on “Structural Performance of Precast Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Sandwich Panels Enabled by FRP Connectors”. He obtained his PhD Degree from CEE in 2019. He is a Research Associate who is supervised by Prof. J.G. Dai, Associate Head and Professor of CEE.

Congratulations to Miss Jue ZHAO on receiving the ‘Excellent Presentation Award’ at NCEC 2019

Miss Jue Zhao, a PhD student supervised by Prof. Xiang-dong LI (Chair Professor of CEE), received the ‘Excellent Presentation Award’ at the 10th National Conference in Environmental Chemistry held in Tianjin, China during 15-19 August 2019. The title of Miss Zhao’s winning presentation was ‘Natural and anthropogenic drives of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from a Tibetan perspective’.
