Professor Lei SUN

Director of Research Centre for Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface, Associate Director of Centralised Animal Facilities, Professor

Designs new strategies for ultrasound neuromodulation and ultrasound/photoacoustic molecular imaging and theranostics

Biography

Prof. Lei SUN, Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sports Technology (formerly the Department of Biomedical Engineering), He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China and his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California. And joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2008. His research interests include understanding the underlying mechanisms and possible translational strategies of using ultrasound to modulate cellular activities, such as neuromodulation or immunotherapy, investigating the potentials of ultrasound bio-effects for cancer therapy and diabetes, and multimodality molecular imaging and theranostics.

Prof. Lei SUN has 25 years of research and development experience in medical ultrasound technology, including system development, signal/image processing and biomedical applications. He holds 20 US and Chinese patents, either granted or filed. As a Principal Investigator, he has led research projects in Hong Kong and Mainland China with a total funding of over HK$80 million HK dollars, including RGC Senior Research Fellow, Collaborative Research Fund (CRF), General Research Fund (GRF), Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF), Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), MOST, NSFC, etc. He is the director of research center of Non-invasive Brain Computer Interface, Deputy Director of the Centralized Animal Facility, member of the University Council, member of Staffing Committee and Research Committee of the Faculty of Engineering. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles and international conference proceedings, including Nature Methods, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Communications, PNAS, Advanced Science, Research, Molecular Psychiatry, Brain Stimulations, Biomaterials, Cell Reports, etc. He is the general chair of the Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation 2025 (FUN25), has hosted scientific sessions at various conferences. He has won Merit Award in Research and Scholarly Activity, Research Grant Achievement Awards, Faculty of Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
