The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sports Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University traces its roots back to the “Biomedical Engineering Programme” within Jockey Club Rehabilitation Engineering Centre (JCREC) established in 1987. Formally established as the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2012 and renamed in 2026 to embrace the fast-growing sports technology sector, it strives to innovate for the betterment of human health by providing a supportive and enriching education and research journey for aspiring students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Developed from the original focus on prosthetics and orthotics, the Department now covers a convergence of diverse disciplines within biology and medicine, sports and engineering, including Biomedical Imaging, Sensing, AI and Wearable Technology; Brain-Machine Interface and Neural Engineering; Molecular/Cellular Engineering and Biomaterials; Precision Diagnostics and Therapy; Prosthetics-Orthotics, Smart Ageing and Rehabilitation Engineering, and; Sports Science and Technology.

Being the first-in-Hong Kong, the BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering undergraduate programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and by the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) for its P&O stream. The BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Technology is also the first programme in Hong Kong to equip students with the relevant knowledge and skills for the fast-growing and evolving sports technology market. The Department also offers taught postgraduate programme (MSc) as well as research programmes (MPhil and PhD).
