Subject:  University stance on the use of generative  AI in learning, teaching and assessment

Dear Students,

The widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) software such as ChatGPT has caused heated discussions in the education sphere with its implications on learning, assessment, and academic integrity at the centre of the debate.

PolyU takes an open and forward-looking stance on the matter and sees GenAI as a positive and creative force in education. While embracing the use of new technology in education, PolyU upholds the principle that students should be accountable for their own work. A set of guidelines on the use of GenAI in assessment has been developed for students to advise you how to respect your own work and the work of others as well as how to use GenAI critically, ethically and wisely.

This set of guidelines will take effect from the Summer Term of the 2022/23 academic year. Students are urged to be mindful of the guidelines on the use of GenAI and the latest subject and assessment documents for the acceptability of the use of GenAI. In case of doubt, please consult your subject teachers.

To support students exploring the possibilities of GenAI, an AI Playground has been established in BC401 which maintains a set of up-to-date GenAI tools so that teachers and students can get hands-on experience. You are welcome to explore more about GenAI by visiting the AI Playground.

Best regards,

Prof. Kwok-yin Wong
Vice President (Education)
