Honouring distinguished alumni at the 11th Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony and Dinner

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) presented its 11th "Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award" to seven alumni at the award presentation ceremony and dinner on 25 April 2017 at Hotel ICON. More than 300 distinguished guests including awardees and their families, proposers, past award recipients, senior management and staff of PolyU attended the event. Prof. Roy Chung Chi-ping, Guest of Honour and Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Prof. Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU and Mr Alex Wong Chung-bong, President of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations presented the awards to the seven distinguished alumni. They are (in alphabetical order of last name): Mr Stephen Au Ling-ming, Managing Director of MTECH Engineering Co., Ltd., Mr Dennis Ho Chiu-ping, Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr Lau Kam-chiu, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer of Automated Precision, Inc., Ir Eric Ma Siu-cheung, Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government, Prof. Mike Wong Chik-wing, Deputy Managing Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Ir Prof. Wong Kwok-keung, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kum Shing Group and The Hon. Frankie Yick Chi-ming, Member (Functional Constituency - Transport) of the Legislative Council, HKSAR. Addressing the event, Prof. Tong commended the awardees as shining examples of talent, hard work, perseverance and resilience. “PolyU graduates, together with the new generations of graduates, will become a significant driving force to shape a bright future for our society, our nation and our world.” Prof. Roy Chung praised that the awardees were excellent testimony to PolyU’s efforts in the nurturing of competent professionals as well as caring members of society. Mr Chan Tze-ching, Chairman of PolyU Council, expressed that the success stories of the awardees had demonstrated the University’s unwavering commitment to meeting the expectations of society, and contributing to the development of Hong Kong, the nation and the world.  To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of PolyU, the award recipients, both past and present presented a birthday cake to their alma mater at the dinner. Other highlights of the event included live band performance by graduates and students.  The event was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Alex Wong.  Jointly organised by PolyU and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA), the biennial "Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award" aims at honouring outstanding graduates of PolyU and its forerunners – the Government Trade School, the Hong Kong Technical College and the Hong Kong Polytechnic – for their distinguished professional accomplishments and significant contributions to the community and their alma mater. Over the years, PolyU and its forerunners have sent forth more than 380,000 graduates.  Launched in late 1996 and now came to the eleventh time, a total of 73 distinguished alumni in various professions have been honoured in the award selection.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University – University Fellows Association Gala Dinner 2017

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University – University Fellows Association recently organized its first Gala Dinner in celebration of the 80th Anniversary of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). About a hundred of guests, including University Fellows, PolyU Court and Council members, senior management, staff and student representatives, attended the Dinner. The Dinner took place on 27 March 2017 at Hotel ICON. Addressing the event, Prof. Roy Chung Chi-ping, Co-Chairperson of the Association’s Management Committee, expressed his gratitude to the Association’s members for their generous support for its many initiatives such as talk series, the Student Development Sponsorship Scheme for Service-Learning (SL) projects and the Scholarships for Outstanding PolyU Student Athletes over the past two years. On the occasion, Mr Chan Tze-ching, Chairman of PolyU Council, and Prof. Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU and Honorary Patron of the Association, commended the Association for its contributions to the University’s development, particularly its efforts in promoting the holistic development of students through its various meaningful programmes. Prof. Tong also shared with the guests PolyU’s latest developments in teaching and research during the Dinner. Apart from the University’s commitment in advancing our society, the guests also had a glimpse of PolyU students’ achievements in sports and SL through the amazing performance by the PolyU Karatedo Team and the sharing by students who had participated in some self-initiated SL projects. The event also saw the Association’s presentation of Membership Certificates to University Fellows of the years 2015/16 and 2016/17 and Scholarships for Outstanding PolyU Student Athletes. The Dinner concluded with Mrs Katherine Ngan Ng Yu-ying, Co-Chairperson of the Association’s Management Committee, proposing a vote of thanks to the Committee members for their contributions in making the Gala Dinner a success. Established in 2015, the PolyU - University Fellowships Association aims to foster fraternity among the University Fellows and to enhance their roles in promoting the University’s mission in serving the community, as well as to facilitate the all-round development of students. The Association now has 63 Founding Members and 29 Members.

PolyU 80th Anniversary OPAA Reunion and Special Master Class @ Alumni Atrium

The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Association (OPAA) held its signature event "PolyU 80th Anniversary OPAA Reunion and Special Master Class @ Alumni Atrium" on 20 February 2017.  Mr Nicholas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was invited to be the Guest-of-Honour.  He gave a talk on the topic of "Re-industrialisation for Hong Kong", followed by a dialogue session with the participants, including past recipients of Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award, Poly-prenuers, staff and students of PolyU.

CNY Gathering @ Alumni Atrium

The Alumni Affairs and Development Office (AADO) hosted its first CNY Gathering at the Alumni Atrium on 9 February 2017. Over 70 participants including PolyU staff, Board Members of the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations and representatives of Alumni Associations were warmly welcomed by Prof. Timothy W. Tong, President of PolyU. Event highlights included introduction of the venues and equipment of the Alumni Atrium by Ms Nicole Yuen, Associate Director of Alumni Affairs and Development, presentation of the “Distinguished Alumni Association Awards” by Prof. Tong and Mr Alex Wong, President of FHKPUAA, lucky draw and distribution of red packets by Caishen.
