Outgoing
The Research Student Attachment Programme (Outgoing) provides invaluable research experience and an opportunity for full-time PhD students to add a global dimension to university life.
- Successful applicants will be offered a subsistence allowance of HK$250 per day. The maximum allowance is capped at HK$45,000, i.e., the amount for a maximum of 180 days.
- Successful applicants will be offered a flat rate travel allowance of HK$10,000 to cover travel expenses, including a round-trip transportation to/from the host institution and ticket-related taxes, fees and levies.
- Successful applicants will continue to receive stipends and pay tuition fees as required by PolyU, if applicable.

Incoming
The Research Student Attachment Programme (Incoming) provides international PhD students with an opportunity for research attachment at PolyU to foster collaborative research. Two rounds of applications are invited each year.
- Successful applicants will be offered a subsistence allowance of HK$400 per day. The maximum allowance is capped at HK$72,000, i.e., the amount for a maximum of 180 days.
- Successful applicants are not required to pay tuition fees to PolyU, but may be required to pay tuition fees to their home institution.

One of the most exciting parts of being a research postgraduate student is travelling around the globe for scientific conferences, where I can meet the leaders in the field and their cutting-edge research. With the financial support of PolyU Research Student Attachment Programme (RSAP), I am grateful to have the opportunity to spend half year studying in Imperial College London, one of the top-notch universities in the world. The attachment programme not only connects me to a new research group but also to new cultures and values. I particularly enjoy brewing and refining research ideas with group members during coffee breaks!

Exchange at University of Groningen, the Netherlands
Can you imagine getting a chance to exchange research ideas with a Nobel laureate under the Research Student Attachment Programme (RSAP)? I have opportunities that others cannot access, as my host supervisor is Prof. Ben Feringa (one of the Nobel laureates in Chemistry in 2016).
It is an honor for me to join a multi-disciplinary research group and learn from other research sub-group leaders. In Prof. Feringa’s research group, there are a total of five research sub-groups: 1. smart materials, 2. catalysis, 3. molecular motors, 4. photopharmacology, and 5. sustainable polymers. All the sub-groups’ research focuses and directions are different, which gave me the opportunity to transfer knowledge with members of other sub-groups during research group meetings. This allowed me to learn from other research areas and provided me with alternative concepts for my future research direction.
Furthermore, Prof. Feringa’s research group consists of members from different nationalities, including the UK, USA, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Romania, and Mexico. It is valuable to share cultural differences, as well as enjoyable national traditions, guidance, and research experiences with other group members.
I am pleased to join a mini-conference in Münster (Germany) held by Feringa’s group. This also gives me the chance to share and learn not only with researchers in the Netherlands but also with international researchers and to transfer knowledge from different nationalities in Germany.

Exchange at Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore
My experience under the Research Student Attachment Programme (RSAP) at A*STAR was an immensely rewarding. I am deeply grateful to the ABCT and my host lab for welcoming me and providing expert training in cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS). This opportunity allowed me to integrate XL-MS with my PhD work on HDX-MS, creating a powerful approach to study antibody-antigen interactions. Through hands-on experiments and collaborative discussions, I gained valuable insights into protein-protein interaction analysis. The supportive environment and cutting-edge facilities at A*STAR significantly enhanced my technical and analytical skills. This experience has broadened my research capabilities and inspired new directions for my work.

Exchange at University of Groningen, the Netherlands
When my home university PolyU offered me the opportunity to join the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute at the University of Groningen, I was appreciated and overjoyed. Under the expert guidance of Prof. Giovanni Maglia and Dr Andrea Bonini, I mastered nanopore-proteomics experiments on an electrophysiology platform, while every member of the Maglia group generously shared their expertise, greatly accelerating my PhD research.
During my free time, I explored several Dutch cities that seemed straight out of a postcard, and I forged friendships with colleagues from various countries. We cycled around the city, tried different foods, and played sports together, which filled me with warmth. This exchange has immersed me in diverse cultures and perspectives, continually reshaping my thoughts and how I view the world.

During my exchange at the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University, my research mainly focused on photoacid materials based on porphyrin. At PolyU, I primarily focus on material synthesis and its corresponding applications, while the mechanism is the main area of research at Duke, which means I can learn new things. Additionally, professors from other universities visited the group I was in, providing me with opportunities to communicate with them. Last but not least, I also made new friends from different countries, all of whom helped make my experience at Duke warm and memorable.

I am incredibly grateful to PolyU for providing me with the invaluable opportunity to engage in academic exchange at Imperial College London through the Research Student Attachment Programme (RSAP).
