Lucy Icking - 4 months in HK

The 4-month adventure at AAE PolyU – from table tennis to urban satellite positioning

Lucy Icking, a German table tennis player of TTV 2015 Seelze, spent four months at the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU AAE) working on urban satellite positioning research from July to November 2021. In an interview by Sport Buzzer, Icking explained that she was attracted by the excellent reputation of PolyU AAE’s urban satellite positioning research team. She then decided to join PolyU’s Research Student Attachment Programme (In-coming Visiting PhD Students), adding a unique adventure to her doctorate in Hong Kong. The research focused on improving the accuracy of the locating system by various ways and means of communicating with the artificial celestial bodies. Apart from her science research, Icking also kept up with her table tennis training in the University’s squad and a club. AAE has been actively engaging in internationalization and we welcome researchers and scholars from around the globe to join our big family. AAE students shine at Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2021

An innovative project titled Project Devum, conducted by Bryce D. O. Diaz and Adel F. Deen, two Year 3 students in B.Eng. (Hons) in Aviation Engineering, won the Second Runner Up (Undergraduate Section) and My Favourite Pitching Award at the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) held on 1 August 2021.    Organized by The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong, the YPEC aims to provide a dynamic platform for prospective or young engineers from five different sections (Secondary School, Sub-Degree, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Open) to exhibit their engineering projects in presentations and booths. This year the theme of YPEC was “Transformer”, envisioning our young professionals not only to convert their pioneer ideas into realities, but also transform the world into a better place. The awarded project, Project Devum, provides a solution to cellular inadequacy in remote locations through distribution of gas balloons in the troposphere, in order to reduce the connectivity disadvantage of remote locations and the cost-related concerns.   The Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering would like to extend our congratulations to Bryce and Adel on their achievements.
