Summary
Abstract
The interaction between shock waves and boundary layers is ubiquitous on supersonic vehicles. Complicated flow phenomena such as flow separation, unsteadiness, and extreme pressure load and heating rates may arise from this interaction. A sound knowledge of shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction is crucial to the design of supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. The intrinsic instability of shock-induced separated flows is discussed in this seminar. It will show the ability of the intrinsic instability to induce streamwise heat-flux streaks on the ramp surface, excite low-frequency unsteadiness, and promote laminar-turbulent transition downstream of reattachment.
Speaker
Dr Shibin Cao received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2013 and 2015, respectively. He was awarded a PhD degree by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University in 2021. Then, he joined the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as Research Assistant Professor. His current research interests include 1) flow instability and transition in shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction; and 2) direct numerical simulation of supersonic and hypersonic flows.
