PolyU Summer Institute 2024

Overview

 

The PolyU Summer Institute 2024 is designed for Secondary 4 and Secondary 5 students, or equivalent,
to have an immersive university experience at our campus and in Hong Kong. 
Interested students may choose to enrol in either
(i) a residential camp (5 days, 4 nights); or
 (ii) a credit-bearing course (1 week) and a residential camp (5 days, 4 nights).

Introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE)

Subject Description:

This one-credit value subject introduces students to the essential aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship in a digital world. This subject is designed to be interactive, with short videos, cases, in-class discussions and activities interspersed throughout the subject’s online platform and five face-to-face seminars.

Objectives:

The objective is to prepare students with an entrepreneurial mindset and apply innovative strategies to find creative solutions that benefit both organisation and society in the age of digital transformation.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:

a. demonstrate an elementary understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship;
b. appreciate the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship in the local and global community;
c. appreciate the applications and implications of the latest technologies on entrepreneurship and innovation; and
d. identify ethical issues in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Remarks:
Students of the same gender will be assigned to the same room. No single rooms will be arranged.

Meals: Meals are included for the 5-day programme
Attachment with Faculty/ School:

Participants will be attached to two of the Faculties/ Schools during the camp.

 Certificate: A certificate of attendance will be awarded upon completion of the camp (5 days, 4 nights).

  • Applicants should be studying secondary 4 & 5/ Grade 10 & 11/ Year 11 & 12 students (or equivalent) in the academic year 2023-24.

  • Only non-local students who enrol in the credit-bearing course and do not hold a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card (i.e. do not have the right of abode in Hong Kong) is required to apply for a student visa before coming to study in Hong Kong.
  • Application procedures and guidelines will be specified in the ‘Notice of Offer’ if your application is successful.
  • The student visa application fee is included in the programme fees.

Notes:

  • The programme fee covers meals during the residential camp and 4-night on-campus accommodation.
  • Financial assistance will be offered to local students who have financial needs to participate in the credit-bearing course, and are currently receiving one (or both) of the following financial support from the HKSAR government:

(a) Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) Scheme; and/ or

(b) Full grant from the Textbook Assistance Scheme (TA) for secondary school students.

  • All fees paid are non-refundable unless otherwise specified.
  • Payment procedure and deadline will be specified in the ‘Notice of Offer’ if your application is successful.

 

Principal's Nomination Sponsorship

  • Students ranked amongst the top 20% of their peers in the same level with their Principal’s nomination can apply for the Principal’s Nomination Sponsorship (HK$1,000 in cash for local students and HK$2,000 in cash for non-local students). Selection will be made by the subject lecturer.
  • The nominated students will be granted the sponsorship upon successful completion of the course and meeting the course requirements as mentioned above.
  • A certificate of participation (with a sponsorship) will be issued.
  • For application, please download the “Principal’s Nomination Form” here, seek your Principal’s approval, and upload it as supporting documents when submitting your online application.

     

An applicant should submit a complete online application and all required documents before the application deadline, please prepare the following documents before you start the online application process:

(i) Residential Camp

  1. A completed online application form (HERE); and
  2. Scanned copies of school examination reports for the last TWO terms (Final Term of 2022/23 and 1st Term of 2023/24) in English or Chinese.
     

(ii) Credit-bearing Course + Residential Camp

  1. A completed online application form (HERE); and
  2. Scanned copies of the school examination reports for the last TWO terms (Final Term of 2022/23 and 1st Term of 2023/24) in English or Chinese; 
  3. (Strongly recommended) A personal statement written in English. Your personal statement may include:
    o A brief self-introduction; 
    o Reason for being interested in the course; and
    o Your expectations of the PolyU Summer Institute
  4. Applicants who wish to be considered for the Principal Nomination Sponsorship are required to submit a scanned copy of the completed Principal’s nomination form
     

Selection and admission result

  • Applicants should adhere to the deadline: 31 March 2024 (non-local students); 31 May 2024 (local students) 
  • Applications will be holistically reviewed and on a rolling basis after 31 March 2024. Application without sufficient supporting document(s) may not be processed and may cause delays. 
  • PolyU makes offers of admission from mid-April until all places are filled. 
  • Priority will be given to Secondary 5, or equivalent, students.
