Dr Yeung Kin-man is President of Biel Crystal (HK) Manufactory Limited. Despite keeping a low profile, he has “touched” the lives of about half of the smartphone users around the world with his products. Biel Crystal is leader and largest manufacturer of touchscreen glass panels for mobile devices globally. An engineer by training, Dr Yeung embarked on his journey towards entrepreneurial success with his far-reaching vision and unremitting courage.

Biel Crystal was founded in 1986 and soon secured orders from luxury watchmakers in Europe. Dr Yeung received its first order of one million units of mobile phone glass panels in 2003 when his factory was only producing a few thousand units each month. He bravely took the challenge and invested in state-of-the-art machinery to fulfil the order. Then repeat orders grew from one million units to 100 million units, paving the way for Biel Crystal to become the world’s largest maker of touchscreen glass. With offices in Switzerland, Korea, Vietnam and various provinces in Mainland China, Biel Crystal now treads into businesses as diverse as fingerprint sensors, automotive display covers, real estate and hotels.

Dr Yeung’s business acumen and achievements have earned him countless accolades, such as 2016 Industrialist of the Year Award from the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Outstanding Achievement Award 2016 from the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries, and 2015 Leader of the Year – Commerce and Industry/Finance Award from Sing Tao News.

Apart from his business endeavours, Dr Yeung assumes many public offices and strives to contribute to society. Inter alia, he is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a consultant for the Heung Yee Kuk New Territories, President of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations, and President of the Hong Kong Industrial and Commercial Association. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2016 and awarded a Sliver Bauhinia Star in 2017 by the HKSAR Government.

Dr Yeung is also a generous philanthropist in Hong Kong and Mainland China. His material and financial support to various worthy causes throughout the years amounts to over RMB 300 million, earning him a place on the Asian Philanthropist List in Forbes Asia magazine. Education in particular, lies close to his heart. Alongside donations made to the City University of Hong Kong and Vocational Training Council, he established Yeung Kin Man Endowed Professorship in Business Administration at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to support research in management aiming to elevate management standard and advance industry development.

Chairman Lam, University Council Members, President Teng and Honoured Guests,

I am deeply honoured and grateful to be awarded a University Fellowship by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). I would like to take this opportunity to thank PolyU for recognising my humble contributions to society and my modest philanthropist efforts.

As an entrepreneur in the technology industry, I have always kept in close contact with talented scholars, alumni and students from PolyU. We also happen to share the same philosophy with PolyU as manifested in your motto “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind.”

Being one of the key players in the global market of touchscreen glass panels for mobile devices, Biel Crystal is especially interested in how touchscreen devices can benefit society apart from being a daily communication tool or an entertainment hub. I will continue to direct our passion at solutions through technology, and I sincerely hope our products can help people enhance their way of living.

On the other hand, PolyU’s reputable Faculty of Business has been nurturing generations of professionals much to the advantage of the local business sector. I am glad to sponsor an Endowed Professorship as a humble effort to propel management research for value-added benefits in the context of business administration, and to advance development in industry and commerce.

The University has an impressive track record of providing professional training to students, many of whom have become leaders in different industries and sectors. I have strong faith and absolute confidence in the research specialists and graduates groomed by PolyU. Biel Crystal has been recruiting many of them for various positions, who have proven to be invaluable assets to the company, greatly boosting our production efficiency and business development.

Today, many cities in Mainland China are developing into thriving technology hubs where innovation and vitality have propelled many new businesses to flourish. I have travelled around the world but I still like our country most. Biel Crystal moved its manufacturing base to the Mainland more than 30 years ago. From a humble start to becoming a leading enterprise, our motherland has offered all the favourable factors we need to develop our business. I believe the Greater Bay Area will offer even greater opportunities for the young generations and aspiring entrepreneurs to venture. I look forward to more synergetic collaborations with PolyU in the future. Together, we can open new chapters in technology and contribute to our nation and the world. Thank you.
