Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

Our mission is to educate young people to pursue professional careers in nursing, one of the world’s most “caring” professions. This innovative academic programme develops students’ competency in delivering quality care, carrying out relevant research, and making significant contributions to the health of the community.

Students master skills in clinical reasoning, communication, and the use of technology. They also learn how to work efficiently alone and with other healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare.

Programme Characteristics

PolyU was the first university in Hong Kong to provide a pre-registration degree programme in nursing. Our innovative approaches to learning and teaching enhance our students’ critical thinking and clinical decision making skills, and our graduates are both leaders in the nursing profession and responsible global citizens.

Our modern facilities include nursing therapeutics laboratories (equipped and furnished as virtual clinical wards with simulation laboratories and other new technologies), mental health nursing laboratories, the Yuen Yuen Institute Chinese Medicinal Nursing Laboratory, the Dorothy Wong Intensive Care Laboratory, Gerontological Nursing Laboratory, the Herbal Medicine Learning Centre, the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services, and the Yuen Yuen Institute Learning Resources Centre.

Field practice is arranged in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, old age homes, day care centres, and other community centres. We also offer a wide range of overseas student exchange programmes. To obtain properly balanced and comprehensive clinical experiences, students have opportunities to adapt to a variety of practicum locations, environments and rotating work schedules.

Student Message

PolyU's School of Nursing is the first higher education institute in Hong Kong to offer bachelor’s degree programmes for post-registration nurses and undergraduates. Our teachers are committed to nurturing our clinical skills and competence, as well as critical thinking to prepare us for a challenging nursing career in the future.

With this aim, the School provides state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities for delivering lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials. The Clinical Skills Laboratories are equipped with advanced simulation systems that provide authentic and safe learning environments for students. In addition, the School has been collaborating with local hospitals and healthcare facilities to offer clinical placements that give opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and understanding of specialty clinical areas and readiness for practice. More importantly, our teachers often emphasise the importance of giving care with empathy.

I am glad to have a chance to study at the PolyU School of Nursing!

Lai Yan Kiu

PolyU’s School of Nursing integrates theories and practice in their undergraduate curricula to nurture graduates that are able to meet evolving healthcare needs and changes in society. Supported by our faculty, who are leaders in the nursing field, innovative educators, and committed researchers, our nursing programmes are advancing nursing education by providing opportunities for students to practise in the School’s nurse-led Integrative Health Clinic, experience high-fidelity patient simulation training, undergo overseas exchange, etc. These learning experiences have given us insights into the nursing profession that have prepared us for our future careers. I am so glad that I chose PolyU.

PolyU is the right university for me. If you are looking for a nursing school that can equip you with professional knowledge and skills, as well as nurture you to be all-round learner, PolyU is your choice.

Tam Ka Man

PolyU’s School of Nursing is Hong Kong’s first tertiary education institution to offer a Nursing degree programme. For more than 45 years, the School has been providing a holistic education that integrates theories and practice, as well as cultivating leadership, research innovation, and social responsibility of nursing students.

Studying at PolyU is challenging but very rewarding.  I have been given many opportunities to develop my potential.  For example, I participated in a student-initiated innovative project that utilised robots to enhance the learning experience of nursing students.  I had a valuable opportunity to undergo my practicum in Spain, a country renowned for its excellent organ donation system, where I learnd a lot and practise my skills in a different healthcare setting.  I also joined the summer research studentship programme to gain hands-on research experience under the guidance of experienced researchers.

All in all, I have fulfiled my potential in PolyU’s School of Nursing, and I am so glad that I chose PolyU.
