Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims and Learning Outcomes

This programme provides specialism mechanical engineering education with focus on meeting innovation and design engineering demands in modern industry. Its unique and interdisciplinary curriculum is developed with an aim to nurturing students to synthesise technology, design and business for the development of high value-added innovative engineering products and systems. The programme provides graduates with the fundamental scientific knowledge, engineering techniques and industry insight required for the development of engineering products and systems that are innovative, meeting international standards of quality, successfully marketed and competitively priced. Graduates will equip with the skills required as professional design engineers, research and development (R&D) engineers, product engineers, project engineers or engineering designers. They are expected to play important roles in driving the transformation of Hong Kong's industry from comprising original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to innovation-driven original design manufacturers (ODM) and original brand manufacturers (OBMs) for advancing their success in markets in Hong Kong and worldwide. Upon completion of study, graduates of the programme are expected to have the ability to:

  • Perform design and development for engineering products and systems with comphrensive and thorough considerations of market needs, technology and business constraints;
  • Apply engineering science, design, and business knowledge to analyse engineering design concepts and realization innovation; and
  • Manage innovation projects for engineering products and systems.

Programme Characteristics

The programme provides integrative education and practicum in the design and analysis of innovative and realizable engineering products and systems that satisfy market needs. Adopting the learning outcome-oriented and interest-based teaching and learning approaches, the programme helps students to develop their knowledge in engineering design and product/system development, marketing and communication, teamwork, management and self-learning skills. Graduates are able to play leading roles in industries by virtue of their well-balanced education and practical training in design and analysis for engineering innovation and realization.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Career Prospects

Graduates of the BEng PAED have excellent opportunities to start their design engineering and R&D career in practically all industrial sectors, with job title as design engineer, R&D engineer, product engineer, project engineer or engineering designer. Because of their ability and extensive experience to integrate mechanical engineering knowledge with design in project settings, our graduates are competent to work as mechanical engineers in consultancy firms in environmental and building services engineering, public utility companies, building and construction sectors, aviation technology industry, electronic and manufacturing industries and government departments. In addition to serving the community and industry as engineers, some graduates created their own innovation and technology business with product innovation for their successful leveraging the knowledge and techniques in engineering design, business and marketing they learned from the programme.

Curriculum

Students are admitted to the senior year of the 4-year degree programme.  All students are required to take subjects in the areas of engineering design and analysis, which reinforce their knowledge of designing high value-added and innovative products. Major focus is placed on the use of computer-aided tools to simulate the function and analyse the performance of products.

In the final year, students are provided an opportunity to select specialised subjects to expose them to the up-to-date technologies and skills for designing, developing and engineering new products. Meanwhile, they are required to conduct a cross-semester 6 credits Capstone Project in which they are required to conduct marketing research and analysis, devise conceptual and engineering designs, and undertake product function and safety analyses. In general, a prototype is expected to demonstrate the functionality and usability of the product. The students can opt for Cooperative Education (Co-op) study pattern which is facilitated through combining summer internship with the Capstone Project. A Co-op student is expected to be engaged in a remunerated full-time position and contribute as a training/ entry-level professional to design engineering and innovation projects at a Co-op industrial partner’s establishment.

Student Message

BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

Graduate Engineer, Main Kind Industrial Limited

Unlike traditional mechanical engineering programmes, the BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design (PAED) focuses on developing students’ inter-disciplinary expertise in high-end product design and development. It covers not only fundamental mechanical engineering subjects, but also product innovation, marketing and design subjects. The programme offered me ample learning experiences. The student exchange study, final-year project and alumni dinner gave me valuable opportunities to build my professionalism. I am well on the way to becoming an engineer with the backing of ME.

Some people say, “An engineer can turn an idea into reality and change the world!” I recommend this programme to those who are innovative and passionate.

KONG Yuk Ying, Iris

BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design

Mechanical Engineer, ASM Technology Hong Kong Limited

The PolyU BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has well equipped me for my career development in design engineering. The programme focuses not only on engineering theories and basics, but also the practical skills for decision-making and problem-solving in all stages of product development and design engineering projects.

I joined ASM Technology Hong Kong Limited after graduation as a mechanical engineer.  Currently, my job involves engineering design of semiconductor processing equipment. The BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has provided me with engineering knowledge from different fields, as well as the skills for the integration of real projects. What I have learnt closely matches the needs of my job now. The programme offers courses on mechatronics, mechanics of materials, design for manufacturing, etc., which are all important for me in handling engineering design and coaches me for future career development.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has also provided many opportunities for me to gain hands-on experience in engineering projects. The projects cover different product development stages, including market research, engineering design and analysis, and prototype making. The practical experience I have attained during my undergraduate study enables me to be a fast-learner in my current position and apply my technical knowledge effectively.

The PolyU BEng(Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design programme has paved my way and shown me the path to a bright professional future. I am glad to have taken up this life-changing experience.
