Project Title
Evaluation of a Novel Artificial Intelligence-Powered Wearable Device for Ocular Misalignment Assessment

Synopsis

Ocular misalignment, encompassing strabismus and the more common heterophoria, significantly affects visual function and quality of life. Precise binocular vision is essential for optimal depth perception and a wide field of view. Disruptions of this binocularity can have serious consequences, with accurate and timely assessment essential for early detection and effective management. However, current gold-standard approaches, such as the prism cover test (PCT) and Hirschberg test, depend on well-trained specialists. These methods only provide static snapshots of ocular alignment, missing dynamic fluctuations crucial for understanding conditions such as intermittent exotropia, which is more prevalent in Asian populations. Continuous, objective monitoring is essential for comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment.

This project aims to develop a novel, low-cost AI-powered wearable device for comprehensive ocular misalignment assessment. The system will use PDLC film to enable rapid, automated cover testing and apply it to an AI-based eye-tracking model. The evaluation will be carried out in two phases: system validation, testing accuracy and reliability against targets of known eccentricity, and clinical validation, benchmarking performance against the PCT in clinical environments.
