ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Four SHTM faculty members were recently rewarded for excellent performance in their fields.

Professor Brian King received an SHTM Teaching Excellence Award for his impressive effort in inspiring students' global leadership aspirations in a stimulating learning environment.
Professor Rob Law, who has authored and co-authored 260 refereed articles in high impact journals, received an SHTM Research Excellence Award in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the enhancement of research excellence at the School.
Ms Almen Yau received an SHTM Service Excellence Award in recognition of her consistent operational excellence and exemplary services at the SHTM.
Dr Daniel Leung was recognised with the inaugural Online Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding performance in delivering his course and engaging students in an online environment.
Mr Guy Llewellyn, a research student in the Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund Scholarship 2019/20 in recognition of his academic performance.
Dr Honggen Xiao obtained support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for a study entitled "Cross-Cultural Space and Place in Science Communication: Tourism Research in Five Language Communities".
Professor Sam Kim and Ph.D. graduate Dr Felix Elvis Otoo received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper entitled "Are Senior Tourists Distinctive According to Personal Traits? Application of Plog's Psychographic Model" at the 10th International Conference on Tourism (ICOT2020 Virtual Conference) on 17-18 September 2020.
D.HTM student Ms Wan Fangzhou, Angela received The Padma and Hari Harilela Scholarship 2019/20. The scholarship was established in 2011 by Dr Hari N. Harilela, head of the Harilela Group, which plays a significant role in the professional development of the hotel industry.
In celebration of World Tourism Day, the SHTM organised its own Dress Orange Day. This year, the event was held virtually on 25 September. SHTM staff and students came dressed in orange, the School's colour, to show their support and demonstrate unity. Staff and students were invited to take part in a range of exiting activities, including a short Video Competition with the theme "What would you like to say to OUR industry?" and a Tourism Knowledge Competition.
  • The winner of the grand prize for the Video Competition was SHTM Ph.D. student Ms Provia Kesande, and two second prizes went to SHTM Ph.D. student Ms Fanny Manner-Baldeon and BSc student Ms Assem Ospan, respectively.


  • The winners for the Tourism Knowledge Competition were Ph.D. students Ms Ekaterina Chevtaeva, Ms Farisha Nisha and D.HTM student Mr Hongbo Zhang.
