Industry Heavyweight Featured in D.HTM Distinguished Lecture Series
For more than a decade, the groundbreaking Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management (D.HTM) programme has been a key part of the SHTM's efforts to nurture links between academia and the industry. The programme features a Distinguished Lecture Series in which leading academics and industry executives from around the globe share their perspectives on and insights into a wide range of important topics in hotel and tourism management for the advancement of education, research and practice.

On 28 May 2019, Mr Gregory Rockett, former Vice President of Corporate Hotel Development – Americas Region at Hilton, who currently serves as Professor of Practice (Hotel Management) at the SHTM, delivered the latest D.HTM Distinguished Lecture, entitled "Forrest Gump, Tracking 'Big Game' and Adventures in Hotel Development", to assembled staff, students, practitioners and academics. The lecture reflected on the experience of evolving with the industry over three decades, described the skill set that facilitated a dynamic hotel development career and offered recommendations for future hospitality leaders.

The inaugural D.HTM Distinguished Lecture was delivered on 10 May 2013 by Professor Susanne Becken, Professor of Sustainable Tourism, Griffith University. Subsequent lectures were conducted by a host of prominent scholars and industry leaders, including Professor Zhang Guangrui, Honorary Director, Tourism Research Centre of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Mr Chanin Donavanik, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Executive Committee, Dusit International; Professor John Bowen, former Dean and Barron Hilton Distinguished Chair, Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, University of Houston; Mr Arthur de Haast, Chairman, Global Capital Markets Board and Hotels & Hospitality Group, Jones Lang LaSalle; Professor Chris Ryan, Professor of Tourism Management, University of Waikato; Mr Qi Ji, Founder and Executive Chairman, Huazhu Hotels Group Ltd; Mr Steve Rushmore, President and Founder of HVS; and Professor Andreas Papatheodorou, Professor of Industrial and Spatial Economics with Emphasis on Tourism, University of the Aegean.

As the world's first professional doctoral programme in hotel and tourism management, the D.HTM prepares graduates to excel in today's dynamic global environment by developing their innovation, creativity and advanced research skills within an Asian context. Now in its twelfth year, the programme attracts a range of professionals from around the world who are interested in augmenting their careers, from experienced practitioners and government representatives to academics.

Building on the success of the D.HTM in Hong Kong, and as part of its commitment to furthering hospitality and tourism education in mainland China, the SHTM introduced the programme's advanced teaching philosophy and model to the mainland. Jointly offered in Hangzhou by the SHTM and Zhejiang University, the D.HTM was officially launched in mainland China in 2013. The programme's success has helped to take the mainland one step further towards its goal of becoming a global tourism power by producing industry leaders equipped with an international vision and capable of innovative thinking.
