Professor Kaye Chon and Dr Dan Wang attended the 23rd Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Texas, USA, on 3-5 January 2018. Dr Wang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Keeping Up with the Joneses: Emergence of Travel as a New Form of Social Currency".
Dr Karin Weber attended the SITE + MPI Global Forum in Rome, Italy on 12-14 January 2018.
Dr Qu Xiao attended the I-CHRIE Board Meeting in Palm Springs, USA on 12-14 January 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Sam Kim, Dr Henry Tsai and Dr Qu Xiao attended the APacCHRIE Board Meeting in Guangzhou, China on 19-20 January 2018. Dr Kim also attended the APacCHRIE Forum on 19 January.
Professor Rob Law, Dr Sangwon Park, Dr Mehmet Koseoglu, Dr Markus Schuckert and Dr Dan Wang attended the 25th Annual ENTER Conference in Jönköping, Sweden on 24-26 January 2018. Professor Law presented two co-authored papers entitled "Overreliance on Mobile Payment Solutions for Purchasing Air Tickets in China" and "Time-Varying Browsing Behavior of Hotel Website Users". Dr Park presented a co-authored paper entitled "Consumer Evaluation of Hotel Service Robots". Dr Koseoglu presented a co-authored paper entitled "Co-authorship Analysis of Social Media Research in Tourism and Hospitality". Dr Schuckert presented a co-authored paper entitled "Chinese Travelers' Mobile Payments: Market Disruption and Risk Management". Dr Wang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Factors Influencing Customers' Intention to Use Instant Messaging to Communicate with Hotels".
The SHTM Food and Wine Academy presented a seminar "Discover Grand Cru Burgundy with Jeannie Cho Lee MW" at the School on 25 January 2018. This special seminar was conducted by SHTM Professor of Practice (Wine) Jeannie Cho Lee, with the participation of three winegrowers from Burgundy: Mathilde Grivot from Domaine Jean Grivot, Pierre Duroché from Domaine Duroché and Alex Moreau from Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils. Participants in the seminar were able to meet these professional winegrowers, who both farm the land and craft their unique wines from it.
Professor Haiyan Song and Professor Cathy Hsu attended the 28th Annual Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Conference in Newcastle, Australia on 5-8 February 2018. Professor Song presented a paper entitled "Are Travellers Willing to Pay Air Passenger Duties?" Professor Hsu delivered a keynote speech on "Hospitality and Tourism Education: Research and Future Directions".
Dr Wilco Chan attended the 3rd International Symposium on Social Sciences and Management in Osaka, Japan, on 6-8 February 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a seminar on the topic "Development of Leadership in Hospitality and Tourism Industry" at the Sorbonne University in France on 7 February 2018.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a lecture entitled "Career Progression for the Future of Hospitality and Tourism Industry" at the Siam University in Thailand on 13 February 2018.
In conjunction with the Club Managers' Association of Hong Kong (CMAHK) and under the guidance of Faculty Advisor Ms Anny Ho, the CMA SHTM Student Chapter organised a Club Industry Career Showcase for SHTM students on 14 February 2018. It offered different levels of programmes tailored to fit the students based on their knowledge, experience, career goals and plans and areas of interest.
Dr Wantanee Suntikul attended the Gastronomy and Tourism Research Group Meeting in Bergamo, Italy, on 21-23 February 2018.
Nine MSc students from FERRANDI Paris attended a study programme at the SHTM from 26 February to 23 March 2018. During the four weeks, they took subjects on "Innovations in Hospitality" taught by Dr Soyon Paek and "Tourism Development in Asia" taught by Dr Vincent Tung. They also visited the Hong Kong Golf & Tennis Academy on 6 March to gain an understanding of hospitality innovation in Hong Kong.
Professor Kaye Chon attended the 6th World Tourism Forum Lucerne Think Tank in Greece on 2-3 March 2018.
Professor Chon gave a guest lecture on "Entrepreneurship and Leadership in Hospitality and Tourism" at MCI Management Center Innsbruck in Austria on 5 March 2018.
Under the guidance of Faculty Advisor Dr Stephen Pratt, the Eta Sigma Delta SHTM HK Chapter organised a "Women in Leadership" series event on 22 March 2018. Motivated to make a change, a small team of passionate students aimed to do their part through debunking stereotypes about gender roles to bridge the gender leadership gap in the hotel industry. The event targeted hospitality students from the SHTM and other institutes, aiming to foster their faith in dreams and equality. Sharing their experiences, advice and thoughts on overcoming gender stereotypes were Ms Rainy Chan, former Regional Vice President and General Manager of The Peninsula Hong Kong; and Ms Rebecca Lee, Vice President - Hotel Development, Hotel & Lifestyle Development Services Corporate Office of Galaxy Entertainment Group.
Professor Chon was invited to speak on the topic "Innovation Leadership for Global Competitiveness" at the Siam University in Thailand on 26 March 2018. While in Bangkok, he also shared his perspectives and insights in a course entitled "Service Innovation and Leadership in a Changing Environment" on 27-28 March.
Mr Jonathan Sutton presented a paper entitled "Using Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner's (1997) Cultural Framework: Individualism Vs Collectivism to Better Determine Inbound Tourist Behaviors: A Hong Kong Study" at the 6th International Conference on Business and Social Science in Kyoto, Japan, on 27-29 March 2018.
