
Biography
Dr. Eric Chan is a certified hospitality educator (CHE) currently serving as a Senior Lecturer and Undergraduate Programme Director at the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, following his retirement as Associate Professor in 2022. He also serves as Hall Warden, contributing to student welfare and community engagement.
With over a decade of experience in the hotel industry. Dr. Chan has held significant positions at prestigious establishments such as the Island Shangri-La, The Park Lane, and Hyatt Regency Hong Kong. His outstanding service earned him the Outstanding Employee of the Year Award from Hyatt International Corporation. He also gained insights into tourism as a partner in a travel agency.
A passionate researcher, Dr. Chan has established a robust foundation in Environmental Management, publishing extensively in international journals and presenting at global conferences. His work is frequently cited, and he has secured multiple research grants, including those from the Hong Kong.
Dr. Chan holds positions with several top-tier journals, including the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, the International Journal of Hospitality Management, and the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. He has been recognized for his contributions, being named one of the top 10 reviewers by the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management in both 2014 and 2016, and receiving accolades for his published work.
In 2016, Dr Chan was nominated for the Research Excellence Award 2016 organised by the SHTM. His co--authored article entitled “Co-creation and Higher Order Customer Engagement in Hospitality and Tourism Services” published in International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management was also chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2017.
Dr. Chan’s teaching portfolio encompasses courses in hospitality facilities management, environmental management, lodging operations, human resources management and tourism marketing. He is dedicated to fostering a dynamic learning environment and has implemented the SHTM Mentorship Programme to provide students with valuable guidance. His teaching excellence has been acknowledged through nominations for awards, including the SHTM Teaching Excellence Award.
Beyond academia, Dr. Chan has conducted seminars and workshops for the tourism industry, enhancing service quality and revenue strategies. He has also played a key role in developing a partnership with the Hospitality School of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, creating a certificate course in Housekeeping Management aimed at disadvantaged youths.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Chan was awarded the Service Excellence Award in 2016 by the SHTM. His recent recognition as one of the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists in Sport, Leisure & Tourism by Stanford University underscores his influence and commitment to the field.
