Abstract:
Health professions education (HPE) is often perceived as a distal service-based activity within academic institutions. This presentation aims to explore different ways of positioning HPE as a strategic, scholarly, and institutional priority at the centre of teaching and learning research agendas in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Drawing on interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships, it will examine how HPE research can drive innovation, inform policy, strengthen learner outcomes in both clinical and academic settings, and enrich the broader scholarship of teaching and learning.

Through case studies and institutional exemplars, attendees will gain insight into how HPE can be embedded within broader research strategies, attract competitive funding, and contribute meaningfully to global conversations on inclusive, culturally responsive, and future-ready health workforce development. Facilitated by Dr Felipe Retamal-Walter, Chair of the Professional Education Research and Engagement Theme in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Queensland, this presentation invites educators, researchers, and institutional leaders to reimagine HPE not as an add-on, but as a foundation for educational excellence and innovation.
