Summary
Coral reefs support critical biodiversity and carbon sequestration but face a projected 90% decline due to climate change. Traditional concrete artificial reefs (ARs) are limited by rigid designs, high pH levels, and poor durability against sulfate attack. This seminar introduces an innovative 3D-printed AR technology designed to overcome these barriers. By utilising low-pH concrete ink and CO2-integrated printing, this project aims to achieve complex biomimetic structures with improved bio-receptivity.
In this research salon, Prof. ZHANG will present the first annual progress of his project. He will discuss achieving biomimetic structural complexity in ARs through 3D concrete printing, as well as controlling micro-level surface mineral composition, morphology, and pH to enhance bio-receptivity.
