Summary

This research utilizes Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) with LiDAR technology to improve urban forest management in Hong Kong. By integrating LiDAR data with wood chemistry analysis, the project estimates the carbon content of individual trees, focusing on carbon storage potential. A mobile laser scanning system captured detailed tree models, and a new algorithm addressed missing data issues. Destructive sampling provided allometric relationships for carbon stock estimation. The resulting model accurately estimates above-ground biomass and carbon stock, aiding Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goals. This interdisciplinary effort highlights the need for region-specific models and supports Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action.
