The research team has examined the structural issues affecting Hong Kong’s 350,000 migrant domestic workers (MDWs), who face the risks of discrimination, abuse, and exploitation. Working closely with NGOs and stakeholder groups across Hong Kong, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the team identified gaps in language proficiency, health literacy, and trauma support, and translated research into practical action.

The project developed resources, education programmes, and workshops to strengthen MDWs’ knowledge, confidence, and access to support. More than 300 workers completed English language courses, improving communication with employers and local people. Another 300 improved their health literacy through cancer awareness events and resources, helping them better engage with health professionals. In addition, 75 MDWs were trained as ambassadors to provide trauma-informed peer support through mentoring and train-the-trainer models.

The research has also strengthened community organisations by providing evidence and a platform for joint advocacy, helping them present stronger messages to government and improve their internal practices and support systems.
