Research by Prof. Pan Lu demonstrates how urban studies can reach beyond academia through contemporary artistic practice. Drawing on research into urban culture, cultural memory, visual politics, and the historical development of Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland, the work has been translated into research-based films and exhibitions that bridge academia with the international art world.
Projects including Traces of An Invisible City (film), Miasma, Plants, Export Paintings (film; received the Award for Excellence at the 32nd Image Forum Festival in Japan), Many Undulating Things (film), Ode to Infrastructure (exhibition) and Seven Questions for Asia (exhibition) have been showcased at international film festivals, museums, and art exhibitions across Asia, Europe, and North America. Together, these initiatives have engaged more than 9,000 viewers and participants, enhancing public understanding of urban history, colonial legacies, visual culture, social transformation and cinematic culture. The projects also demonstrate how creative practice can broaden research impact, foster international dialogue, and make scholarly knowledge accessible to diverse audiences worldwide.
